Garth Marenghi's Darkplace: Season 1 Reviews

October 23, 2018
The show-within-a-show is a masterpiece of nostalgia-fuelled parody that teems with comic talent: there's Alice Lowe, Matt Berry and guests stars like Stephen Merchant, Noel Fielding and Graham Linehan.

Leaving aside its dizzying triple-coding of characters and absurd situations, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace also revelled in failure, making it funny.

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace is masterfully, hilariously hideous, with Ayoade knowing exactly how to drop in pointless camera moves, botched continuity, and slackly paced action sequences for maximum comic effect.

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace is for those with a love of dodgy horror and great comedy, which I see as a truly winning combination.

Parody may not be a new premise, but it's the utter uniqueness of Garth Marenghi's Darkplace that so entices viewers who watch its first and only season.

Brilliance and the absurd collide in this comic television masterpiece from 2004.

[Matthew] Holness and pals have seen enough rubbish Stephen King adaptations to replicate their cheesy charms, while sending this schlock up with the ruthless panache of true scholars.

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace was weird, but also truly original and brilliantly funny.
October 23, 2018
A brilliant satire, each episode was brimming with clever ideas, great jokes and hilarious performances, making the show's cancellation a shocking twist worthy of one of Garth's own story's.
October 23, 2018
This might be dead-on satire of bad television, but it's no more entertaining than the thing being satirized.
October 23, 2018
From its misplaced edits to flat performances and overripe dialogue, Darkplace is perfect in its imperfections.

Now, don't get me wrong - I liked it better than I thought I would, and found much of it pretty damn funny, but just wished it had been a bit more self-critical and questioning of its audience and institutions.

Darkplace itself is a tour de force of badness, a deliriously dim saga of cosmic broccoli, talking cats and phantasmal Scots.

This is the worst, but it's not bad. [Full review in Spanish]
October 22, 2018
The entire show is cheaply made, poorly synced, cheesy as hell, and endlessly entertaining because of it.
October 22, 2018
Ultimately, it's that warm affection and attention to detail that distinguishes Darkplace from other attempts to lampoon the much mocked world of horror fiction.
October 22, 2018
It's a bizarrely dark, incredibly over-the-top, and sometimes disturbing send-up of terrible horror shows, books, and movies. But it's also funny.
October 22, 2018
It's not quite clear whether this parody is meant to be funny or scary, but it doesn't really matter, because the supposedly terrifying lost Darkplace episodes aren't scary, nor is Garth Marenghi's Darkplace funny.

One episode could make a funny little Internet short, but the premise is not big enough to fill a series. It would be baggy even in spandex tights.
October 22, 2018
Consequently, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace is one of the funniest TV comedies of the last decade because the supernatural medical drama assembled by Marenghi and his made-up cohorts is such a clumsy piece of TV.
