This season may not feel as strong overall, but there are individual episodes that are so fantastic they continue to show why the writing on Gentefied is ultimately brilliant. Go to Full Review
Carmen Phillips Autostraddle 12/01/2021
It's an exquisitely detailed portrait that asks all of its characters to be complicated, messy, whole people and not the two-dimensional flattened cutouts of "perfect immigrants" so often thrust onto our families. Go to Full Review

Theres a sense about Gentefied Season 1 that absolutely translates to Season 2, in the best way. Its this feeling that the stories being told arent trying to exclude anyone, but theyre also not trying to include everyone. Go to Full Review

The moral clarity around [immigration] frees up the show to focus on its characters and their stories, which is where Gentefied really sings. Go to Full Review

Basically, Gentefied may just be the best show on tv that reps our people. And it's why you should be watching it. Go to Full Review

The comedy about a family's fight to save their taco shop gets very real about the problems facing the Latinx community-especially this season, as "Pops" stares down deportation. Go to Full Review

Michael Antony A @RT48850580 10/24/2023 Mikey's TV Review: Gentefied (2020-2021) I can't vouch for the current content on Netflix anywhere else in the world, but here in Europe the diversity and quality of ‘foreign language' programming from around the globe is outstanding. If the recent hype surrounding Korea's ‘Squid Game', Belgium's ‘Into The Night', Germany's ‘Dark' and France's ‘Lupin' weren't proof enough, check out ‘Gentefied' a show that sadly only ran for 2 seasons. While the US produced Spanish/English language family drama occasionally veers from blunt soapy cliché to genuine tear inducing intimacy, there's no denying the strength of the cast and the writing. Politics, culture, faith and sexual and racial identity are all skilfully and playfully scrutinised with plenty of humour and heart. While the central story of three Mexican-American cousins and their struggles chasing the American Dream as their Grandfather faces foreclosure and possible deportation, feels ripped from today's headlines. The cast, lead by the enigmatic Joaquín Cosío (Quantum Of Solace, The Thin Yellow Line) as Casimiro ‘Pop' Morales are instantly likeable, relatable and engaging, with especially good turns from Karrie Martin as granddaughter Ana, and Joseph Julian Soria (Crank) and Carlos Santos as grandsons Erik and Chris respectively. Each episode is only around 30 minutes in length and you could easily binge all 18 episodes in a weekend. Although a 3rd season wasn't green lit, the initial story arc is complete after 2 seasons with very few story threads left to tie up. That said, a few more moments with the Morales family wouldn't be a bad way spend another couple of hours.
