The series' warm and multidimensional treatment of its heroines is its guiding strength.

Suranne Jones does a tremendous job of conveying the struggle of a woman who constantly chafes against the life she's supposed to live.

Capitalizing on the extraordinary story of Lister, Season 1 unpacks gender performance, sexuality, and female desire; the script is full of thoughtful, sardonic writing.

Gentleman Jack, like its protagonist, has been a triumph of wiry wit, unsentimental empathy and, above all, sheer force of personality, projected with total confidence.

Gentleman Jack brightly but also quietly investigates Anne's unusual life with a winning mixture of humor and charm, giving context to modern gender politics by looking to a pioneer from the past.

"Gentleman Jack" is British period drama, and it's also a lot of fun.

This was a powerhouse performance by [Suranne] Jones. The problem was that she made most of the other characters look anaemic and incidental by comparison.

What is wonderful about Gentleman Jack is how cleverly it manages to hold contradictory ideas true at once.

Suranne Jones plays Lister as calculating yet winning, winking at us through the fourth wall.

The first season of Gentleman Jack is a largely amiable watch, putting a character we've not seen before in a series that feels quaintly familiar.

Sally Wainwright has created a truly pleasurable, sometimes painful, often amusing story of a woman looking for love but born into the wrong body and the wrong time in history.

Like its cross-dressing heroine, Gentleman Jack is a carnival of false advertising... Much of what's presented as the show's cutting-edge creative splendour is the emperor's new clothes.

Reveals everything that is wrong with colour-by-numbers costume dramas -- because it isn't one... It's not so much that it's a different story (though it is) as that it's a different way of doing that story.

Gentleman Jack is wonderful and delicious and a hoot... This is period drama reworked with wit, energy and verve.

The much-heralded Gentleman Jack, with Suranne Jones and written by the grand Sally Wainwright, comes, I suspect, too heralded.

Jones is wonderful as Lister, striding confidently around, wry, indomitable and smart as a whip, with top hat and twirling cane, like the heroine of some steampunk novel set in an alt-Victorian England.

The only thing to frighten the horses in last night's opening episode was that a woman asked for what she wanted and expected to get it. She behaved, in short, like a man. Phwoar! How sexy is that?
