Ghost Whisperer: Season 1 - Rotten Tomatoes

Ghost Whisperer: Season 1 (2005-2006)

Critic Consensus: Melodramatic and schmaltzy, Ghost Whisperer traffics in contrived uplift and makes a hash of the rules governing its supernatural universe.

Tv Season Info

Jennifer Love Hewitt stars in this sweet, sentimental and occasionally spooky drama as a woman who helps the dead resolve earthbound dilemmas and cross over to the other side. "It's highly emotional," says Hewitt, who describes her character, newlywed Melinda Gordon, as the dead's "last best friend on earth." In the series' first episode, a deceased soldier (Wentworth Miller) needs help locating his loved ones. Other stories find Melinda helping a 6-year-old boy (Joseph Castanon), who doesn't quite understand that he's dead; a drowning victim (Jessica Collins) who refuses to "go to the light" until her twin sister is released from a psychiatric facility; and an angry spirit (Jonathan Firth) who's bent on revenge against those he feels caused his death. Also, Melinda fears the worst when she can no longer see or hear spirits after waking from a week-long coma caused by a head injury.

Critic Reviews for Ghost Whisperer: Season 1

All Critics (12) | Top Critics (8)

At times during ''Ghost Whisperer," the sentiment is so thick you might want to go away from the light -- the light from the TV set, that is.

If TV really wants a success built around this actress, someone in Hollywood should pay attention to her chameleonic and comedic role in "Heartbreakers," and give her a role that plays to those strengths, instead of something this translucent.

September 23, 2005 | Full Review…

Like the ghosts featured on the show, Ghost Whisperer is in a purgatory of its own. It can't seem to decide whether it's a supernatural thriller or a weepy sentimental drama.

The problem is a lack of depth; "Joan of Arcadia," the series this is replacing, had heartfelt moments and significant emotion behind its storylines. Whereas this has Love telling ghosties to head for the light.

There's no bottom to this show's sentimentality.

Ghost Whisperer can be surprisingly moving.
