Critics Consensus

Ghosts could stand to ask more of its characters, but an excellent ensemble and a genial wit make for easy, softly spooky viewing.

stupidest worst lamest most awful unfunny show to ever be put on television. if it were intended for 3 year olds I'd get it. but this is just utter trash

This was painful to watch from the moment it started. I suppose it's just possible that it might have seemed mildly engaging were its UK forerunner not so brilliant, but as it was I couldn't even get through the first episode without cringing in embarrassment at the way it was lifted wholesale from the UK version - with none of the wit, charm, downbeat sardonic humour, creepiness and pathos of the original. The ghosts seem to bear no relation to one another, acting more as a back-drop or Greek chorus, and there is no real sense of the awfulness, sadness and frustrating but loyal friendship for characters who have been stuck with each other for centuries. Clunking acting, cliched script, and no real sense of relationship between the characters, other than batting each other lines to create the next 'punchline'. Give this a wide berth - but if you want something to make you laugh out loud, well up with tears, and choke on your cornflakes at human foibles which have been around since the Stone Age, then stick with the UK version of Ghosts

Cool show to binge-watch in a day or so. Episodes are only 20 minutes. The character development is good. Each Ghost has its own personality and quirks. If you're looking for something lighthearted, corny laughs, and easy watch this is it.

I adore the U.K. version of Ghosts, it is subtle clever, characters stay with you outside the programme. Could barely watch an episode of the US series, brash, unfunny and lacking in all subtlety

I like the show and I watch it all the time on repeat but I will say they do too much in the first season like having Harry possess Jay having a wedding having multiple ghosts come over and visit it's just a lot that's why I feel like some of the episodes in season two are lacking in creativity because they did way too much in the first season and now they have no idea what to do with the second season also I found the character of Sass to be pointless I have nothing against a guy and I'm sure the actor is a nice person but the character is not interesting to me at all

Ugh. I mean, it's a love/hate thing. It's got some funny moments and a good concept, but the writing is just so... cliche. I mean, it's like it was written by a big group of film interns. I know I'm sounding like I'm trying to be a critic or something, but it's just so eye rolling. Like, here is a paraphrased interaction that is the norm between some "bad kids" at Halloween and the parents: : Parents - We're new here, so whatever happened before doesn't matter. : Kids - We were going to egg the house, but since you were so nice we won't : Parents (turning around to walk back) - Oh wow, such nice kids. Glad we took care of the situation [Kids throw eggs at house, Parents in shock] Was that funny or did that make your eyes roll? If you think it's hilarious, then definitely watch it. If you felt dumber reading those lines, then this show might drive you nuts.

Before I watched the BBC original version on HBO Max I thought this American version on CBS was "okay." I liked the storyline and the character development, and it occasionally made me laugh. But the acting is so bad, I found it hard to watch. Also, the dialogue is shallow and contrived and the acting comes across as campy. Then I discovered the BBC version, of which there are several seasons, starring one of the actresses from "Call the Midwife." Now I cannot go back to watching the American version on CBS! The BBC version is FANTASTIC. The acting is excellent. The dialogue is very, very clever and engaging. The comedic timing is truly impeccable. It is one of the best comedies I've ever seen. I laugh out loud at every episode. The actors are so good, you don't even notice they are acting - they seem to be 100% comfortable in their roles, from the very first episode. All of the characters, both live & ghost, are more complex and interesting and funny and way better acted than those on CBS. One example: the irony of the extremely intelligent Neanderthal ghost is so clever and simply fun, and the dialogue is more sophisticated, the timing is superb, and the character is so much better acted in the BBC version that Thor the Viking in the CBS series seems totally boring by comparison. Every single character in the BBC version has clever quirks not found in the CBS version and is superbly acted. Even the throng of plague victims in the basement are more entertaining. It's like watching technicolor instead of black and white. The BBC version is vibrant and funny and touching and so very believable due to the excellent acting. I LOVE the BBC version; it is my new favorite show. I don't know if I'll ever watch the CBS version again.

Watched the UK version and then started the US version. At first I liked the UK version better, but the US version has more creative story lines, I have since changed my mind and prefer the US version. Light , silly, fun!

Really cute, funny, and entertaining show. All the ghost characters and actors are simply amazing.

The problem for me with the American series is the wooden traditional sit-com dialogue. Characters almost never get to use dialogue to give insight into who they are. Rather, they too often say contrived things that are mainly set-ups for the next speaker's punchline. The first show did it from the start. We never really got a chance to learn to like them. So disappointing.
