With humble beginnings as a street kid, Walter Clark Jr. follows his ambition and manages to become the youngest police commissioner in New York history. As he is interviewed for a story about his career, he looks back on his meteoric rise and the personal and professional price he paid to achieve it. While Clark uses his ambition as a shield at work and seems single-mindedly focused on advancement, his one weak spot proves to be his troubled little sister, a teenager who relies on him as her sole caregiver.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Golden Boy's fast-forward structure is compelling, if overly complicated, with Theo James delivering only a passable central performance.

The concept is clever and some of the cast is well above average but the writing, always the most important element of a TV show, is subpar with cliched dialogue that betrays any possible character development. Go to Full Review

James and McBride make music together in the way you want any fictional cop partners to and it's a solid, meat-and-potatoes police procedural, and one that could potentially evolve into more depending on how the flash-forwards are used down the road. Go to Full Review

CBS' Golden Boy is another cop show, but it's not just another cop show. It's considerably better than most of what that genre has had to offer in recent years. Go to Full Review
