Gossip Girl: Season 1 Reviews

Some elements of the original series have been improved, and the cast is much more diverse this time around, both in terms of race and sexuality. But there is something cold about the series. Everyone is slightly robotic.

A show about scheming, oversexed Manhattan high schoolers shouldn't be as boring as the Gossip Girl reboot.

The show is much more fun when it embraces its ridiculousness and dispenses with the superficial hand-wringing. Luckily there are enough glossy set pieces and knowing callbacks to old episodes, though, to make this a giddily enjoyable retread.

We're here for the drama -- for rich, beautiful teens being terrible to each other. But the new Gossip Girl is not quite that, adding in a layer of power and race dynamics that it doesn't seem fully capable of unpacking.

Euphoria and Genera+ion are much further along when it comes to gritty insights into modern teenage life. Even all the supposedly racy sex feels tame. But, as long as the suds keep bubbling, fans new and old will enjoy the lather.

Who is this cynical, glossy goat rodeo supposed to be for? It's hard to imagine actual teenagers recognizing their lives within it.

Gossip Girl's plum role, lead bitch, has been left vacant. Every table at Frenchette can't help a show missing a true protagonist.

It's a sibling-rivalry drama set in the age of Instagram and COVID, where social media is the true villain. That part may be accurate - just not quite as much fun.

While Gossip Girl has savviness galore when it comes to the complexities of clout-chasing, when it comes to making its characters feel like real and interesting people, it has no idea what it's doing.

At the same time, mentions of "the patriarchy" do not lead to plot lines about smashing the patriarchy so much as they reflect adult writers' awareness that the patriarchy is something a smart teenager might inveigh against.

The reboot dooms itself by placing non-white characters in clones of roles originated by a white cast and expecting viewers not to notice. This robs them of the opportunity to create truly original personalities.

Gossip Girl doesn't always seem to realize what it has on its hands: a built-in delivery device for its own critique...but there's plenty of space to build.

That being said, the only real requirement for a show like Gossip Girl is that it is watchable. By that measure, the new Gossip Girl stumbles, but hot drama is hot drama.

The old magic isn't back yet in a woke reboot that forgets a guilty conscience is no substitute for a guilty pleasure. But when these privileged teens get their digital knives out the result is wicked, compulsively watchable fun and deliciously addictive.

This is the laziest kind of reboot, one that hopes you'll be too distracted by a familiar title to realize the actual end product is terrible. But it's an abject failure, no matter how many times Gossip Girl says "XOXO."

The Upper East Side has a new royal family and three of them are stuck in a new Love Triangle, but it all seems very much the same as it did by the end of the first series: Tired and repetitive.

Gossip Girl makes no pretense of hewing to any concrete universe, moral or otherwise. But the women in the show -- and their relationships -- often ring true. Even better, they're entertaining.

Over the four episodes provided for review, Gossip Girl struggles to shade in its characters, to outline its narrative stakes, or to make an argument for why it should exist in the first place.
Jul 6, 2021
It's too hard to grasp the stakes of nü Gossip Girl, to understand what the consequence of each Instagram ploy or calamity actually is. It all plays pretty meandering and weightless so far; there's no suspense.

Gossip Girl burns through more story in the first four episodes than the original did before February sweeps (Google it, kids) - and as a result, too much of that story feels half-baked.
