Critics Consensus

Grace and Frankie's stellar cast adds an undeniable appeal, although its sloppy dialogue and clichéd sitcom setup will still leave most viewers wanting.

Critic Reviews for Grace and Frankie Season 1

All Critics (39) | Top Critics (27)

Grace and Frankie is not entirely worthy of them, which is disappointing, especially since its co-creator, alongside Howard J. Morris, is Marta Kauffman, a co-creator of Friends.

It's hard to classify "Grace and Frankie" except to say it's splendid television.

May 7, 2015 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

The opening episode creaks and groans under the weight of a malnourished premise that feels like an update of an old movie, say, The First Wives Club. The setup is stagey, the dialogue slack (or -- worse -- obvious).

It's difficult to overstate how good Tomlin and Fonda are here.

Perhaps one of Grace and Frankie's strongest moves, especially in early episodes, is not to dump a ton of backstory on the audience all at once, especially when it comes to the lives of the children.

While Grace and Frankie is in no way perfect, it is still a pleasure watching Tomlin and Fonda vibe comedically together.

Nov 13, 2015 | Full Review…

The creation of two '90s sitcom alumni, Grace and Frankie is both more emotionally complex than the average laugh-track show and sunnier than the typical cable dramedy.

Aug 10, 2017 | Full Review…

Inconsistent in tone and bereft of a real handling on its titular characters' trauma, Grace and Frankie still manages to entertain thanks to a refreshing sweetness and good ol' star power.

An amusing original series.

Whatever the hook of the show is, it's working on me. I haven't laughed all that much yet, but that's O.K. Maybe Grace and Frankie is more a comedy in the classical sense: everyone's happy in the end, and then there's a wedding.

Audience Reviews for Grace and Frankie: Season 1

Just found my new favorite show!

Very funny show with a new and exciting concept. The actors are funny and the writing is very quippy.
  • Sep 08, 2018
Fun, funny, and relatable. I absolutely love these characters and am 'wanting' for nothing. I suppose whoever wrote that first review was a man who can't at all appreciate these two women.

Started watching and got hooked fast.

Love this show. I'm just starting a re-watch and the first episode is so very poignant. Great acting.

Tired of shows where all are rich. Biggest problem these old broads really have is to replace their meal tickets. More depressing than comedic. Should be listed as drama. Jokes are great but few and far between. Gonna go watch Roseanne.

Single-joke series. That joke is in the intro. Everything goes downhill after that.

I enjoy watching this light hearted show. It's easy and fun and I feel like it accurately portrays what it would be like to be a divorced woman in her 70s. However, I can't stand Martin Sheen's character, Robert. He is extremely unlikable, petty, and narcissistic. I mean, really, after cheating on his wife for 20 years, he can't forgive Sol for having an intimate slip up with his wife of 40 years. Seriously, that seems ridiculous. I much prefer the story line with Grace and Frankie, although Sam Waterson and his character, Sol, are enjoyable. I will definitely keep watching the show when I am in need of some lighthearted escapism. I feel like more shows like this should be available as it seems like everything new is so dark and serious. It's nice to lighten up!

I should not like this show, I'm not a fan of Fonda, the show is way out there in liberal land... and I'm a staunch conservative... yet I cannot stop watching. The show is funny and naughty but in an innocent way and touches on some pretty deep stuff , but in a way that reminds me a lot of shows of days gone by. I love it, I'm only sad that I'm already into season 3 and will be done with it soon. I will say though, the men look extremely awkward when they kiss LOL... like i'm not buying it.

Love love love it! So funny, can’t wait for season 5.
