Life at the Ends of the Earth
Paul Murton sets out to experience island life on the myriad of islands that lie off the Scottish coast. In this edition, he travels to Eriskay, Barra and Vatersay in the Outer Hebrides. On Eriksay, he discovers how the island's remoteness helped preserve a unique way of life for centuries. He also learns how Eriksay locals hid thousands of bottles of whisky from the exice men after a ship laden with the liquor ran aground off the shore in 1941, and how the incident became the inspiration for the film Whisky Galore. In Barra, he visits the only airport in the world where flights land ont he beach, finds out about the island's tradition of crofting and goes foraging for cockles. Heading across the causeway to Vatersay, Paul joins local fishermen trawling for lobsters and ends his journey at spectacular Barra Head, which has remained uninhabited for over a century.
