The series follows the coming-of-age story of Pip, an orphan who yearns for a greater lot in life, until a twist of fate and the evil machinations of the mysterious and eccentric Miss Havisham shows him a dark world of possibilities. Under the great expectations placed upon him, Pip will have to work out the true cost of this new world and whether it will truly make him the man he wishes to be. A critique of the class system, Dickens' novel was published in 1861 after first releasing it in a series of weekly chapters beginning in December 1860.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Even with the inestimable Olivia Colman as a ringer, Steven Knight's try-hard reimagining of Dickens' masterwork falls well below expectations.

The barbed storytelling batters your interest. Still, there is Olivia Colman’s Miss Havisham, so good she transcends every limitation this show produces. Cut her loose on all the classics. Go to Full Review

As for Knight’s Great Expectations, the writing may have its iffy moments but it is beautifully shot, rich with atmosphere and Colman’s Miss Havisham is a musty treat. Go to Full Review

This Great Expectations is pulpy and preposterous, intentionally inelegant, virtuosically unsubtle. Go to Full Review

The 2023 BBC show Great Expectations is gloomy, dark (literally) and struggles to provide avenues to flesh out its characters. Go to Full Review

Based on the 19th-century classic by Charles Dickens, Stephen Knights’s adaptation of Great Expectations was a colossal disappointment. Go to Full Review

The moral compromises in the quest for climbing social classes that preoccupied Dickens have transformed into clear opposites for Knight, a Manichean approach for a work so richly layered. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Daren T @RT19659903 01/14/2025 Sometimes new approaches to traditional works lift a new and welcome interpretation, or at least an interesting perspective. Sadly, this modern depiction of Great Expectations does none of that. It seems intent on trying to shock and create a very immature approach to writing, which degrades and loses the value of the story and the characters. Instead of the clever stream of the intertwining of the characters and developing the events, it is comes across as a short scenes put together with a spattering of scenes set to replace strength of writing with cheap gimmicks. I was so disappointed at what I thought would be a promising new work, but sadly this series failed. The BBC produces so few dramas these days and so to waste an opportunity such as this is unforgivable. I love some modern dramas, but BBC, your producers need to be more mature and not pander to dumming down quality in order to seek to attract viewers who, in all likelihood, are not going to be swayed by the odd sex scene or shock of someone urinating up against a gravestone. Dickens' stories are famous, well read and timeless because of the cleverness of the writing and characters that he builds, mess with that at your peril. See more John C @RT50251044 12/16/2024 This is not an adaptation. It is a nonsensical reinvention that Dickens wouldn’t even recognize . They should have called it “ Great Misinterpretation “ It really sucks ☹️ See more Carrie B @RT37867036 10/20/2024 There is simply no way to express the depth of my disappointment in this dark, nonsensical, hack of an ‘adaptation’ of the much loved Charles Dickens classic, Great Expectations. For those of us who are addicted to classic English literature, this series is a slap in the face. Even more infuriating…the fact that the writers credits lists Steven Knight first and Charles Dickens second! I can’t believe Olivia Colman, whom I have great respect for, agreed to participate in this butchery. This series and its writers deserve negative stars. See more Esra Y @RT95409318 01/29/2024 While Olivia Colman is insanely perfect, every single other aspect of this adaptation fails to prove this show is anything other than waste of time and money Couldn't pass through even Ep.2 See more Patrick B @RT45240103 08/02/2023 Cannot understand why a great literary work is mutilated into something totally unrecognisable. We cuddled down to engage with a new adaption of Great Expectations, and instead, got a diminutive adaptation that does this great work of Charles Dickens an unforgivable disfavour. Story unrecognisable, slutty, vulgar, totally out of character for Dickensian England. We sat watching the first episode and a feeling of unease rose like the fog on the marshes as to how this story might unfold. Needless to say, we made into about fifteen minutes of the second episode before we, like Compeyson, true to the story, flicked the channel and drowned this awful beast and the disservice the producers BBX and FX thrust upon us in this cabalistic adaption delivered for viewing. My question would be, did Steven Knight even read the book and absorb the wealth of literary genius this author had to offer? The only glimmer of redemption was Olivia Colman as Miss Havisham, who like Sonya Falsworth in Secret Invasion moulded her character to being true to character. To her, I tip my hat and say "Bravo madam." See more Diogo S @Diogoset 07/03/2023 The story offers a point about getting enough instead of trying to be too ambitious. Coincidentally, The ambitious production follows unwittingly the moral footsteps of its main character. See more Read all reviews
