      What to know

      Critics Consensus

Halo is too derivative of better science-fiction series to emerge a fully-formed elite, but glimmers of promise and faithfulness to the source material signal it's not out of the fight just yet. Read critic reviews

There is a series of games called Halo, that have a large fanbase that knows this show followed ZERO of that material. The only redeeming quality is the Spartan Suits and gear all look authentic to the series. With the lore behind the game and novels written based on the games lore, you think someone would have at least kept it inline with that, but it just creates it's own story which doesn't match anything I've played or read and it's rather disappointing. Even if it wasn't Halo and some other Sci-Fi series, the only thing I actually enjoyed from the series is the side story with Soren and Kwan Ha. The main plot is predictable hot garbage. It's got the look, but it's a whole other story and not a good one.

Enjoyed the season. some questionable decisions to change the way the main character would behave but those changes appear to have been made due to a lack of confidence in how a helmeted character would be engaging without seeing their face.

If I was someone that worked on this show, I would be embarrassed of it. No one involved has ever played a Halo game or read any of the novels (despite them claiming its based on the novels). The story is awful, the acting is cringe, and the special effects are so bad I wonder why the budget was so high. Given all of Halo's other missteps as a game franchise, I'd say it is time to let Halo die with some dignity. But after this pile of garbage released, that ship sailed. It's time to just let Halo die, soiled and desecrated.

Played the games when I was younger and my dad wasn't using the 360. It was like watching my childhood die in front of my eyes. I don't like to judge shows and movies on how they stick to the source material but come on man. Chiefs whole thing is that he's a masked demon and (spoiler) They unmask him in the first episode. And he's just some random guy

For a person that have never played the video games like me, it is a great tv show. It got better with each episode; the plot, the cast, the effects, and the acting. I excitedly look forward to watching the 2nd season.

All you can do is laugh at how bad they made this…it's nothing like the game. This was purely a money grab and they succeeded on alienating original fans. I understand trying to be different than the game and make a show but damn at least make it interesting

      • Nov 20, 2023

It was okay. The acting was overall not bad, and the sets & SFX was good too, but there was a certain lack of excitement in the story with regards to Master Chief. Kwan Ha's storyline was more intriguing.

      • Nov 18, 2023

it's just. sad... another failure by big greedy corpo. they say they wanted to appeal to a larger audience, which is funny, because halo got a veery big audience.....

Do yourself a favor: ignore the fanboys. A certain contingent of viewers can't handle the fact that Halo as a tv series is a reinterpretation of the game's iconic story, and not merely a copy/paste duplication. Halo is interesting science fiction with a fair bit of action (though much less than you'd expect), but it's much more focused on its characters and building out the mythology of the universe in which it takes place. John 117, aka "The Master Chief", is one of a small army of mind-wiped, programmed humans kidnapped by their government and genetically enhanced to become super soldiers built for quelling human rebellion. One day, a chance encounter with an alien artifact reawakens John's individual identity and he begins to question everything he knows. As the show goes on, he encovers more about his past, how he was made, and helps some of the other super soldiers (Spartans) to do the same to varying degrees. Most of the vfx in the show are very good. Yes, there are some bits that aren't perfect, but that's always been true of everything vfx heavy. The actors are largely good, and the characters mostly interesting (an exception is the character of Kwan, who's woefully underdeveloped and disconnected from the season's overall narrative), and you can clearly see it's building to something epic. Is it perfect? Not at all. Is it good? Yes it is. Don't let the fanboys dissuade you.
