Critic Reviews for Hap & Leonard Season 1

All Critics (25) | Top Critics (13)

As the Southern day gets hotter, Hap and Leonard just gets more and more entertaining. It will be too slow for some, but you're likely to enjoy the heat.

The joy comes in watching these characters bounce off each other and crack skulls.

May 30, 2016 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

Purefoy and Williams are standouts throughout while Hendricks pretty much settles in. The bloody goings-on apart from their fractious triangle can be jolts from out of the blue. But there's always some cauterizing banter just around the corner.

The unevenness is not a deal-breaker. When Hap and Leonard does strike the right swampy tone, and you sense the alligators waiting for a human snack, it's rich.

Mar 2, 2016 | Full Review…

Hap and Leonard is full of memorable characters that it introduces with panache then idles with, reiterating what we already know, a #longform piece that would be better if it were not so long. (Brevity! Remember when it was the soul of wit?)

The sleepy, swampy ambience is tangible. The characters are appealing, if a little thin around the edges.

Mar 2, 2016 | Full Review…

The rich setting, skilled cast, and A Simple Plan-like setup seems ripe for the kind of baroque development the fans of serial TV demand.

It's violence, adventures, friendship, dark humor. A curious combination that works and that has the crime novel as center. [Full Review in Spanish]

Superb, atmospheric southern noir. Well worth watching for fans of Cold in July. Purefoy and Williams are superb.

Mar 2, 2016 | Rating: 9/10 | Full Review…

Hap and Leonard adapts Joe R. Lansdale's novels (which I'm now eager to read) into a terrifically offbeat caper, serving up a sultry, sexy stew of wry dark humor with flashes of psycho suspense.

Mar 2, 2016 | Full Review…

The show has atmosphere aplenty -- that's one excellent quality it shares with Mickle and Damici's Cold In July; Hap and Leonard could use more of that film's tightly-coiled suspense.

Mar 1, 2016 | Full Review…

This sweaty, savory swamp noir is the most deserving heir apparent yet to Justified, teeming with larger-than-life characters and delectably spiced with rich Texan flavor.

I cant believe I was unaware of this phenomenal show until it already had three seasons under its belt. I cant even name the best feature of it. I love everything about it. Great writing, great characters, plot twists, character depth, interesting backstories, the 80's texas setting, music, awesome villians, etc etc etc. Love This Show!

Horrible violence, story just going nowhere.. sick

I love the short stories of Hap and Leonard and I believe this lives up to them. A great Netflix show to check out if you have not.

That "Children's Charity Fund" sealed the deal, on this one... Or, the disgusting: S01E02, "The Bottoms". Like, no thank you, one grown man passionately stabbing another with his privates - into their "bottom". It's where we go to toilet. Really, who wants to see that. (I can't think of anyone)

Fun TV Show that I'm not quite sure what the actual plot was. Michael Kenneth Williams is GREAT! MKW and James Purefoy have nice chemistry. Jimmi Simpson is great in the supporting role as the bad guy. It definitely takes some interesting turns through the season. You think it's going in one direction and then quickly changes course to a different angle. Very cool characters!

Love love this show and it should be on your Certified Fresh TV even tho I doubt everyone has access to Sundance.

Great Gay character. He is black, comed out and cynical Story little long but actors and suspense are fun.
  • Apr 13, 2016
This is an engaging tale involving longtime buddies Hap Collins and Leonard Pine. The characters are compelling, and there s plenty of action. True to the Lansdale style, their are numerous menacingly weird characters. Although a couple of episodes didn't develop the plot too any great degree, the finale was exceptional., It made me want to see what other fixes these two can get in and out of behind the Pine Curtain.

This Show is hands down straight up the shit! I'm a Joe R Lansdale fan from back in the day when I had time to read. This show has it all bro. Its got cleaver banter, fighting, drinking, drugs, guns, blood, murder, intrigue, and I'm fairly sure a chick with a dick! If you're like me and have a shady ex-wife with big tits then you, me, Hap, & Leonard will all agree "A hard dick knows no conscience"
