James Purefoy ("Rome," "The Following"), Michael Kenneth Williams ("The Wire," "Boardwalk Empire") and Christina Hendricks ("Mad Men") star in a six-hour adaptation of novels by Joe R. Lansdale. Down on his luck after losing his job, '60s activist/ex-con Hap Collins can't help but listen when his seductive former wife Trudy -- for whom he still pines -- resurfaces with promises of finding a sunken treasure in the Deep South. Joining the adventure is Hap's unlikely buddy Leonard Pine, an openly gay black Vietnam War vet with a bad temper and little use for Trudy's feminine wiles. Soon enough the simple get-rich-quick scheme snowballs into bloody mayhem.

A narrative rich with machinations, subtle moral observations, and telling racial politics. Go to Full Review

If you miss the laidback gunslinging of Justified, the plotting switchbacks of Fargo or even the two-fisted ultraviolence of Banshee, Hap and Leonard provides a similar rural-noir hit in appealingly short seasons you can watch in a weekend. Go to Full Review

Hap and Leonard remains exceptional in the way that it illustrates the virulence of America's racism, particularly in communities where whites and people of color exists almost shoulder to shoulder. Go to Full Review

Andrei D 08/31/2024 Finally as charged and violent as it should have been from the start, Purefoy and Kenneth Williams fully deliver See more Post-Apocalyptic T 11/14/2023 Just finished the last episode. Wow, was this season spectacular. You know it's an exceptional show when you experience the same anxiety, fear, and hopelessness that the characters are feeling. The final episode doesn't give you the resolution you were anticipating. Instead, it ends the way things end in real life—messy and sad and not at all what you were hoping for. What made this season even heavier is knowing that Michael K. Williams is no longer with us. As with Chadwick Boseman and Lance Reddick, it's heartbreaking that we'll never get to see what Williams had in store for us. Whatever it was, I have no doubt that it would've been incredible. RIP. See more 06/11/2022 What to say about season three. Mediocre crime plot that at least wasn't broken up by the season one flashbacks that took up way too much time. And the preaching. So much preaching. What could and should have been compelling and sympathetic retellings of how bigotry and hate affected the lives of the characters had zero subtlety, to the point that it felt as if we were watching a documentary or guest lecturer. And what is even worse is that the impact of those lectures lost most of their impact due to the producers shoehorning in what seemed to be every other social message they could think of to the point that the entire season was just bloated. And that is a head shaking shame. See more 06/13/2019 one of the best series made, good script, good drama, good comedy, and good mystery. they should do the fourth season See more 05/17/2019 I was really sad to see this series end. See more 04/08/2019 I really loved season one, and season two was pretty good also. Season three seems entirely self righteous with very simple characters. Gone seems to be the blurred lines of good and bad with complexity worthy of a modern audience. The show is noir, which comes with some stylistic requirements, but season three doesn't even seem to be a shadow of the writing quality of former seasons. See more Read all reviews
