Happy!: Season 1 (2017 - 2018)

Season 1

Critics Consensus

Happy! certainly isn't for everyone, but its appealingly oddball concept and strong performances from Chris Meloni and Patton Oswalt make for a gritty, dark comedy with definite -- albeit unusual -- appeal.

    Oof, that was Rotten.

    Meh, it passed the time.

    It’s good – I’d recommend it.

Tv Season Info

Ex-cop and now-hitman Nick Sax (Christopher Meloni) accidentally uncovers a secret about the Scaramucci crime family led by Mr. Blue (Ritchie Coster) and nearly pays for the discovery with his own life. Upon waking up at the hospital after getting shot, Nick finds that he can now see a blue unicorn who calls himself Happy (Patton Oswalt). ...deranged, hyper-violent, grotesque, too clever by half, but with a hidden heart that won't stop beating...

May 14, 2018 | Full Review…

If you're able to view Happy! mainly as an exercise in style and attitude, with a brilliant lead performance, you'll find a lot to admire here.

Actors are supposed to take chances, and this is a guy who's willing and able. More power to him, even if Happy! overloads on shock value the way Hallmark annually overdoses on sappy holiday cheer.

At times, it's almost desperate in its desire to shock, and mistaking insanity for wit. At other times, it's clever and twisted in ways that could become addictive for the right audience, preferably one at least partially intoxicated.

You might even find that it jerks a tear or two out of you when you least expect it. Absolutely marvelous.

May 24, 2018 | Full Review…

The two form a cute, classic odd couple, and Happy certainly makes for a memorable partner.

Meloni is absolute perfection in this role, and this could stand to be his best yet.

Aug 27, 2018 | Full Review…

It's rude. It's cruel. It's violent. It's messy. It's funny. It's all of those things. But, it's also far smarter than anyone is going to give it credit for.

Comic-turned-ultraviolent dark comedy series pushes limits.

Dec 12, 2017 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

The balance feels off, with some egregious padding and dumb shlock stereotypes dulling the edge of Morrison's zany imagining, but I can't deny I want to see more of this.

Dec 7, 2017 | Full Review…

This is a gross, weird, frenetic show filled with horrible people and terrible deeds, but it's also one of the most inventively shot and acted things I've seen on TV.

Mar 29, 2019 | Full Review…

Meloni is so much fun to watch and Oswalt is so genuine that the inherent cartooniness of the series is actually enhanced by a pair of mismatched cartoons.

Audience Reviews for Happy!: Season 1

As a kid, many of us have imaginary friends. It's a hopeful time, a friendlier time, a happy time. Nick Sax, is none of these things. The former cop, a current hitman is a stew of violence, alcoholism, and pessimism so you can imagine the weird turn his life takes when a kid's imaginary friend shows up asking him to help find his friend, Haley. There is great fun to be had here as these two opposites are thrown together in this intriguing tale of crime and corruption.

Really enjoyed this - interesting and developed characters and a good plot, doesn't take itself too seriously either - it's funny.

This has got to be some of freshest, darkest, funniest and innovative television I've ever seen. I just finished season two and heard the third got canceled. I made an account on rotten tomatoes to try and help raise awareness of how amazing this show is. The chemistry of all the actors and....imaginary friends is amazing, especially Happy and Nick. I actually preferred the second season to the first. Maybe it will never get finished, either way I wanted to pay my respect. I actually felt some strong emotions during that ride, which I didn't expect to be honest. Happy is one of the coolest characters I have ever seen. Love that sassy little bastard. Great show, Bravo!

I thought it an incredible waste of talent on an ugly, violent undertaking.

saw previews for this show on syfy channel a few years ago but it never peaked my interest. Trailers/previews came across corny and silly to me. I end up watching season 1 when it hit netflix and was hooked. maloni kills it. ALL the actors are phenomenal. The premise seems silly but the acting, camera/graphics, set design, writing, EVERYTHING....so well done its far (very far) from silly. This show will probably never get the credit it deserves. The talent is pretty impressive.
