Happy Town: Season 1 (2010)

Season 1
Happy Town

Critics Consensus

Happy Town is entertaining in spurts, but its Twin Peaks-lite storyline is too unfocused and tonally inconsistent to make good on the promise of creepy thrills.

Critic Reviews for Happy Town Season 1

All Critics (28) | Top Critics (16)

Not really caring what happens to any of these characters can be a powerful incentive to bail out early. Count on that happening with Happy Town, which just doesn't have much pulling power.

Happy Town, unfortunately, is so concerned with how you should feel - at all times - that it mostly feels tiring.

The pieces are here. They just feel messy and unfocused.

The show delivers on the boast by presenting a literate and well-constructed knockoff of Frost/Lynch's patented Twin Peaks atmosphere but with its own freaky-folksy voice.

But so long as we get to dine on the same scenes Neill is chewing on, then count me in for dinner.

The cast is solid but "Happy Town" is more story-driven than a platform for star turns.

The inability to maintain tone through dialogue and character ultimately makes for a show that feels awfully shallow.

Happy Town is no more Twin Peaks than a 12-year-old in a Los Angeles Lakers replica t-shirt is Kobe Bryant.

Considering that it's about a town with a serial killer, I found myself surprisingly bored by the pacing and the plotting.

I can't help but feel like there's the kernel of a good idea at the heart of the show. I just don't know if I want to wade through the rest to get to it.
