John Doyle Globe and Mail 04/13/2022
Tate used to be a take-no-prisoners (pun intended) satirist, blasting away at homophobia and general ignorance, but here the humour can get raw, and gags about sewage and masturbation are more clangers than they are clever. Go to Full Review

Tate might be a veteran character comedian but Hard Cell is her first attempt at a sitcom – and thanks to a lacklustre narrative and an abundance of one-dimensional characters, it really shows. Go to Full Review

There are the bones of a good show in here. They’ve just been locked away behind several sets of bars, rather like its protagonists; as a result, the whole thing stumbles at the starting line and never quite hits its stride. Go to Full Review

Hard Cell isn't terrible, but also doesn't feel particularly fresh. Go to Full Review

There's some real drama and honesty to it. It's a real tough balance to get between something funny to watch and something that can be touching and poignant... It's a great outlet for Catherine Tate to continue to put up some of these characters. Go to Full Review

Hard Cell is a sometimes dated, but sometimes delightful blend of sketch and sitcom tropes that utilizes Catherine Tate's many comedic talents along with a talented ensemble bringing this women's prison and all of its inmates to life. Go to Full Review

Lapine B Aug 31 It’s a shame that the series has not continued. The first few episodes were a bit dry, but they also act as an introduction to the characters and the plot. They are necessary and are what makes the last episode so great! A good series needs a build up like this. If the series continued, I’m sure it would have been fantastic, as we are already adjusted to the characters. See more Michael Alessandro Contarini P Mar 20 Catherine Tate trying to emulate Tracey Ullman - but without the talent (and failing miserably). No new ground covered here. Recycled gags, one-dimensional characters, and predictable plots. See more r. 07/03/2023 Loved this show, Catherine Tate is a brilliant comedian. See more root 07/03/2023 What a great show! Catherine Tate is a comedy chameleon, and I admire that she also co-directed it all. Shame it didn't get a second season. See more Geraldine T @Geralbean 12/24/2022 Gave up after ep.1 . Execrable. See more Greg P 12/18/2022 Like many TV series Hard Cells started off a little slowly, but built quickly into what I would call a dramedy, and a good one at that. Add on Ms. Tate's very varied characters, that we were not aware of until reading the reviews, and it was well worth watching, possibly a second time for us to see her perform. Perhaps our perspective, living in Canada, didn't give us the insights available in the UK, but the drubbing by the "experts" was extremely harsh and goes to show they are not always to be guided by. I won't spoil the surprise ending by commenting on it, but my wife thinks a sequel may be in the future. Well done! See more Read all reviews
