Critic Consensus: Hawthorne is notable for its star and dramatic plot lines, but never quite established itself among other medical dramas currently airing.

Hawthorne: Season 1 Photos

Tv Season Info

Christina Hawthorne (Jada Pinkett Smith), a headstrong yet empathetic Chief Nursing Officer at a Richmond Trinity Hospital, is the focus of this medical drama. The first season opens with the widowed heroine coping with the first anniversary of her late husband's death, but that doesn't stop her from racing to prevent a cancer patient's suicide attempt. As the season progresses Christina must deal with her rebellious daughter, Camille (Hannah Hodson), her former mother-in-law (Joanna Cassidy) and the day-to-day operations of the busy hospital and nursing staff she oversees.

If you want a show with engaging characters and drama, and not just a public service announcement about the very real value of our country's nurses, then "Hawthorne" fails to deliver

When a show wants me to worship a character this feverishly, I can't help it, I resist.

The pieces are in place for a solid drama-with-humor, the kind that cable channels are serving like aspirin these days.

"HawthoRNe" is bland, hopelessly idiotic drivel immersed in enough sugar to kill an army of diabetics.

The "Hawthorne" pilot, directed by Mikael Solomon, moves like a freight train from the start and sustains a decent pace throughout.

Jun 16, 2009 | Full Review…

HawthoRNe's bracing combination of fast-paced professional crises and personal tensions is leavened by the banter she shares with fellow nurses and their somewhat comic dating tribulations.

Oh "HawthoRNe." Your "artistic" spelling did not signal anything good, but this show is so much worse than the cutesy moniker would indicate.

I'm not buyin' it. And neither will you.

Jun 16, 2009 | Rating: 1.5/4 | Full Review…

Despite some potentially intriguing characters, about the best one can scribble on "Hawthorne's" chart is that it's an improvement over TNT's earlier forays into medicine, "Heartland" and "Saved."

As a character study, "HawthoRNe" is weighed down in the pursuit of worthIness.
