Heartbeat: Season 1 Reviews

June 14, 2018
Heartbeat is another forgettable medical drama that... will only leave audiences feeling sorry for doctors and their love lives, and scared to ever enter a hospital like this.

The good news is that after the precarious beginning, when you fall into the rhythm of the series -- tight, barbed, fast-cut but full of heart, literally and figuratively -- it's an enjoyable night in.

Some of it might have been written by a computer, sure, but a better class of computer than sometimes is hired to write for TV.

The situation is growing desperate in America's fake hospitals. Not from a financial crisis or a nursing shortage. It's a desperation of plotting.

NBC's Heartbeat is an annoying anachronism of a show, a program that openly steals ideas from better shows like Grey's Anatomy, ER and House, but has no idea what to do with them.
March 22, 2016
It's a bad show in general, but what is most disappointing is that we could use more procedurals that are helmed by a female character.

Props to Dr. Magliato for being a famous cardiothoracic surgeon. She should actually be a bit offended that this show managed to distill her impressive life into a series of awful cliches.

The rest of us aren't likely to last much past the scene in which Alex pounds on the glass walls in her boss' office and shrieks, "I'm not leaving without my heart!" Whatever. Just go.

One wishes the series would fixate less on the chaos of [Dr.] Panttiere's love life. For all the longing gazes and hasty workplace hookups, Heartbeat is at its most pulse-pounding when it simply steps back to let her do her job.

Creatively, this badly cast, risibly written medical soap is as close to dead on arrival as a series can get.

Heartbeat seems like a Rhimes show, but it isn't one. It's Grey's Anatomy without the charm.
March 21, 2016
The series plays like a rather pallid Grey's Anatomy knockoff, featuring another doctor who cares desperately about her patients, runs roughshod over subordinates and bosses alike, and walks and talks very, very fast.
March 18, 2016
Heartbeat is so invested in using its title and medical milieu for symbolic or transferrable meaning that I suspect the creative team almost would appreciate my condemnation that Heartbeat is, sadly, a show without much of a pulse.

To those who note that Heartbeat is based on the life and autobiography of celebrity surgeon Kathy Magliato, one can only say we've come a long way, baby.

With its rush-about protagonist flirting, sobbing, threatening, cajoling and commiserating, all the while trying to find the true meaning of something or other. Sedative, please. STAT.
