Hello Ladies: Season 1 (2013 - 2014)

TOMATOMETER

Critic Consensus: Stephen Merchant is an intelligent performer, but Hello Ladies is largely a squirm-inducing comedy that lacks the empathy of his best work.

Hello Ladies: Season 1 Photos

Tv Season Info

Stephen Merchant ("The Office") is the co-creator and star of this comedy about an English Web designer in Los Angeles who mistakenly fancies himself a ladies' man and social climber—but never lets the truth get in the way of his (fruitless) pursuit of a good time. Of course, being an eligible bachelor with no takers means Stuart (Merchant) is forced to hang out with Jessica (Christine Woods), an aspiring actor who rents the pool house on his property; his pal Wade (Nate Torrence), who has plenty of free time after his wife leaves him; and his assistant, Rory (Kyle Mooney). There's also the disabled Kives (Kevin Weisman), who's always up for cavorting around Hollywood but isn't really a friend—especially when he has more luck with women than Stuart. Guest stars include Jenny Slate, Crista Flanagan, Sean Wing and David Hornsby.

An underrated gem of a show...a sad sack sitcom well worth catching.

Hello Ladies is awfully obvious, shooting phony fish in the Hollywood barrel.

As a self-important shlepper without any bottom line redemptive qualities, Stuart deserves what's coming to him.

Since Merchant is a gifted writer and performer, the series is diverting and funny, but the character and situations are too familiar.

Fans of Merchant's usual schtick will find much to like, but this brand of cringe comedy has grown dated and predictable. Still, the lanky funnyman has terrific comic timing and delivery, and the show gets a pass. Just.

If Gervais' antics in The Office and Extras struck your funny bone in a positive way, you might find Merchant's first big Ricky-free foray to be a towering comedy achievement.

Merchant doesn't have something to offer. He's proven time and again to have a spot-on wit and flawless delivery, and hopefully Hello Ladies lives up to his legacy.

Shallow protagonist hits the clubs to find love -- and sex.

With wider appeal comes less focus, meaning it's tough to see 'Hello Ladies' doing its source material justice as the series continues.

Not ground breaking, but nice. Which sounds less enthusiastic than I meant it to. It's very likable.
