That wouldn't be a problem if the characters were compelling. Everyone here is a mysterious sad sack.

Hemlock Grove doesn't rely on gore; there are some real characters here too.

Unfortunately, watching the whole thing was less like some kind of insane, bloody feast of oohs and aahs and surprises, and more like eating $28 of McDonald's in your car late at night.

The show, created by writer Brian McGreevy, has no center -- it's a lurching combination of muted delivery and crazy happenings.

This bingeable 13-episode season isn't a taut small-town thriller, nor a glorious horror soap; in fact, it's sometimes downright boring.

Okay, Hemlock Grove. I don't like you and you clearly don't like me or anyone else that cares about things like pacing or compelling narratives, so let's just get this over with.

When it fails, it's a clunky, hackneyed mess. But for the bulk of the running time it's veering wildly in between, making for oddly compulsive viewing.

What really puts the stake in Hemlock Grove -- more so than anything -- is that it's flat out boring.

The often hackneyed CGI is endearing rather than enraging. When the dialogue and acting are bad -- and oh my, they can be very, very bad -- they're not grating. Instead, these flaws are lost in a show that is beautifully filmed and splendidly paced.

Even diehards of the genre will find fault with the show's uneven mix of hokey and horrific elements; a storyline that's often confusing; and acting that isn't always up to standard.

Hemlock Grove is idiotic, tedious, and frequently offensive, and it has absolutely nothing to recommend it.

This sexed-up 13-part series, I'm afraid, is Netflix's first dud. Where it tries so desperately to be eerie and esoteric, it winds up as hackneyed and disjointed as anything the basic TV channels reel out on a regular basis.

Put it in the category of "guilty pleasure." And, actually, it manages to have a little something for everyone, even those who aren't horror genre fans.

I like the show's languid, dreamlike beauty, but horror fans may be less patient. Imagine True Blood directed by Sofia Coppola.

Occasionally leaves a more than competent cast looking less so. Worst affected is Famke Janssen, who plays Olivia Godfrey... Olivia's written so one-dimensionally evil, Janssen never really has a chance.

The writing is ham-fisted and occasionally just howlingly bad.

Hemlock Grove is the sort of supernatural horror thriller that's so concerned with atmosphere and mood that it barely gets around to telling its story... The series's lack of urgency is accentuated by the familiarity of the material.
January 15, 2019
The strident shrillness of much of the writing allows this already plodding production to wander into the territory of the laughably bad.
January 15, 2019
Hemlock Grove simply wallows in its own guts, serving up the predictable chorus line of pretty girls to be disemboweled for your viewing pleasure while the guys hunch around their cigarettes and try not to look too vulpine or lupine.
January 15, 2019
It's a dark soap with nudity, profanity, drugs and, most disturbingly, too many underdeveloped characters with largely unexplained back stories.
