On January 13, 1993, the passengers and crew of the ferry Heweliusz depart from the port of Świnoujście in Poland towards Ystad in Sweden. The journey soon spirals into a desperate fight for survival as a violent storm confronts them with the brutal power of the sea. On land, devastated families grapple with the darker side of human nature and undertake an equally arduous fight to uncover the truth about the disaster and to preserve the dignity and good name of those lost at sea.

As the disaster gives way to the aftermath, we hope that Heweliusz becomes more about closure than about death. That’s about as much as we can ask for, given the real-life tragedy that the show is about. Go to Full Review

I highly recommend giving this Polish Netflix miniseries a watch. Hopefully it’ll inspire you to stay vigilant about the catastrophes that are happening around you and the way the government and the judiciary are sweeping them under the rug. Go to Full Review

CT 8 @ct8787 Jan 30 A gripping story all the more powerful as it’s based on a true life event. A slow burn, but wonderfully told and featuring excellent acting performances. I won’t put it at the same level as Chernobyl, but it’s not far off. I’d love to see shows of this quality being produced in Hollywood, but these days Hollywood has other priorities, none of which involve quality film making. See more Fifty T Nov 30 Starts Slow, Builds Strong, Finishes Weak: Heweliusz is handsomely crafted historical drama that doesn't quite justify its existence. Overall 7/10 - the Polish maritime disaster series starts frustratingly slow, builds genuine momentum mid-season, then stumbles through a rushed finale that denies any real resolution. Ep 1-2 test patience with deliberate pacing and excessive setup. Ep 3 finally delivers personal stakes and emotional engagement. Ep 4 is genuinely gripping courtroom drama. Then Ep 5 condenses what should be multiple episodes of trial into 81 minutes, leaving crucial plot threads dangling. The cast is uniformly excellent - Eleryk's traumatized survivor is particularly memorable - and Holoubek's direction brings cinematic scope to Netflix. Production values rival HBO's best. But after investing five hours in this tragedy, the tepid conclusion and lack of purpose feels like betrayal. It's well-made television about institutional failure that itself fails to deliver on its promise. Quite watchable, ultimately forgettable. See more Greg D Nov 17 This is a story of an avoidable Polish maritime disaster in January 1993 and its aftermath, including a biased investigation and ruthless scapegoating. Its investigative aspect remaining highly speculative, the strengthe of this 5-part mini-series is a harrowingly realistic rendition of a deadly accident at sea. The series is brilliantly directed by Jan Holoubek, special effects are seamless, and faultless acting hightens the dark suspense. Even peripheral characters are fully drawn and believable, while psychological dilemmas of the leading ones are heartfelt and absolutely credible. It has been a while since I felt so deeply engaged in a drama the outcome of which I knew in advance. It depicts very well Poland after the fall of the Soviet Union and the western music of the time being everywhere.
