News & Interviews for High Maintenance: Season 4
There are as many fascinating New York stories as there are fascinating New Yorkers, and "High Maintenance" continues to mine the depths for the most luminous ones.
It asks, again and again, what storytelling is for, and it's okay with an ambivalent answer.
As much as High Maintenance changes or stays the same, that's one constant audiences can depend upon.
Owens is a pure charm, his character's waspishness swelling until a hurried trip to a cafe restroom brings him necessary catharsis.
High Maintenance is undeniably a New York show, and it elevates the messy chaos and density of urban life into an art form, celebrating the sheer existence of so many different forms of life living in close proximity.
Like a good indica, the show soothes. Following trends in online culture and a greater shift in comedy itself, it focuses on providing viewers with those little dopamine hits of recognition, seeing our own lives and experiences in comforting fictions.
The characters we meet are often enduring high-stress situations, if not worse, and the show is focused not on their potential misery but on how they are going to use the love around them to get through it.

Apr 04, 2020High Maintenance remains fresh, observational and throughly accurate into its fourth season, and its ethos is more dawning than ever: It knows what makes contemporary Brooklyn so special. Over the season's nine episodes, High Maintenance gives more and more stirring vignettes that touch on aspects of city life that too few of us are aware. Propelled by a great soundtrack, sensitive writing, and seamless filmmaking, High Maintenance really does measure up with today's best indie/arthouse cinema. Co-creator/star Ben Sinclair revealing that this will likely be the last season for a while (a decision reached before the COVID-19 Pandemic), and considering with how re-watchable and original this material is it's hard not to respect such a choice.
