The main character plotlines do not feel authentic. It's well acted and directed but suffers from an agenda of women are strong and capable and men are just a mess. A generalization perhaps on my part but at it's best are the scenes directly involving the locals and the flood. The melodramatic character subplots just feel too manipulative and trite. Strangely, there's hardly a drop of rain to be seen and yet this is the entire reason it happened. An incredible downpour lasting days soaked ever inch of soil and yet all we are aware of this is through scientific jargon. Perhaps the difficulty of shooting on a limited budget meant sacrificing technically challenging torrential rain. It left a strange and improbable calmness instead. Like watching that disaster movie years ago in L A about volcanic lava flowing so slowly and undramaticaly down the streets. This was kind of like taking a mini course on hydrology that serves as a learning aid that can be applied to current events. The cinematography and special effects are big pluses here. I enjoyed this quite a lot even if I wasn't that much into the characters as much as the events portrayed. SYNOPSIS: 'In 1997, scientists and local government officials in Wrocławia face life-and-death decisions as a destructive flood threatens the city.' This is your typical disaster story: scientist discovers impending disaster, high ranking authority refuse to believe them, disaster happens = oh shit! The difference on this occasion is that this story really did happen. Netflix have made an excellent series here and given it the budget it needed to look incredible. In the main all of the effects are practical and the series looks and feels better for this. This is real actors performing their roles on huge flooded sets. It's totally engrossing from the first episode until it's conclusion. A disaster drama that really pulls on the emotional heart strings. 8/10 See more Read all reviews
