Hip-hop music first developed in the United States in the 1970s and has steadily grown in popularity in the decades since then. This docuseries traces the genre's dynamic evolution from the beginning through the 1990s. It starts with a look at artists -- including Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash -- who laid the foundation early on, and then moves on to other influential groups like Run-DMC and Public Enemy. The show also explores differences in hip-hop on the East Coast compared to the West Coast.

Evolution's smart, confident tone is thanks largely to Shad, who approaches the subject matter with the curiosity and open-mindedness of a student, as if this show is his thesis for hip hop grad school. Go to Full Review

letaiser 06/18/2023 The first to Episodes werent anyrhing for le but the last 2 were absolut great the whole 50 Cent, TI or Lil wayne Story was nice to see See more 06/11/2020 Great in-depth interviews of legendary male voices in hip-hop. 4 seasons and only a single passing mention of Salt-n-Pepa. Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Monie Love, Pebblie Poo, Lisa Lee, and many others were smashed into one 4-minute segment during season 2. Lil' Kim was given more time throughout the seasons because of her relationship to Biggie and Pac. Missy was the only other female artist that was passed the spotlight, which she very clearly shared with Timbaland. Really disappointing because it is such a comprehensive and compelling docuseries otherwise. Women are not shown to belong in the hip-hop pantheon. Which is absolutely false. See more ma'ark t 03/09/2020 Once again Hip Hop Evolution impresses fans with its new exclusive interviews of some rap legends. However, as the source material becomes more recent I feel as if it's not as interesting. See more Read all reviews
