Critics Consensus

Not all of Home Economics' calculations add up, but believable chemistry between its well-cast siblings and a real sense of affection equals a lot of potential for positive growth.

Critic Reviews for Home Economics Season 1

All Critics (11) | Top Critics (4)

The characterizations are uneven... But the balance between sibling meanness and sibling love is handled well, and the dialogue steers into Grace's gift with wry, needy sarcasm and Tatro's talent for making a type of lunkhead lovable.

While there is strength in the chemistry and in the specificity of some jokes, the idea is still a bit too generic overall to generate much anticipation.

All told, the concept and casting have promise. But while it features a modern family, at first blush, Home Economics is no Modern Family.

Apr 7, 2021 | Full Review…

ABC's Home Economics has a canny central idea and a game cast, and though its first two episodes lack a certain surefootedness, there is potential there.

Could have been a solid sitcom about Connor moving back to the west coast... But bringing money into the proceedings does what money tends to do: it snarls everything up into a complicated, ugly mess.

The perfect combination of drama and comedy with a story based about something everyone can relate to -- family issues.

Topher Grace is back in peak sitcom form as a lovably dweeby struggling writer...

The chemistry among the ensemble is so good that we're hoping the show gets better over time.

It's a breezy watch with a casually zany hangout energy, and it hits on some touchy subjects without getting too deep with them. It's tough to talk about money sometimes, but the Home Economics crew finds a way to make it almost fun.

Not sure how much mileage they can get from this premise, but seems OK in the meantime.

Apr 7, 2021 | Full Review…

Audiences who are working in miserable pinch-penny circumstances seem not to enjoy seeing it on TV at home, too. That won't be a problem for Home Economics, which fails entirely on its own demerits.

I think this show is not perfect, but it is entertaining and refreshing, especially compared to a lot of other mediocre shows that manage to be on TV. Also, I love Topher Grace and I think he's underrated as an actor!

Just not funny. Unlikeable characters. Boring, rehashed plots. How is this show on its 3rd episode?
  • Apr 17, 2021

  • Apr 16, 2021
Thought it was mildly above average. The premise allows it room to grow. Hopefully its shakely legs will find firmer ground.
  • Apr 09, 2021
A lot of good potential here. Can definitely see this being the next "family" show.
  • Apr 09, 2021
Terrific pilot! Fun characters, great cast, and real heart. Will be on my watch list!

It's a really great show, hoping to see what's coming!

Nauseating. Provides nothing of value to the viewer.
