The drawings... are as simple as they can be, but still match the vocals' complex expressiveness. Cartoon voice acting is so deeply associated with cartoonishness that the stammering, low-key style of Home Movies is almost revolutionary.

Oh, there's still some very funny stuff here, but it's a few minutes of funny stuff spread over half an hour... It's low-key humor that can be hilarious. While not wall-to-wall laughs, there are enough to make it a half hour worth watching.

The characters never have straight or clean outlines, but rather squiggles that simulate movement. The animation is a moot point for the series though, which keeps the laughs rolling with biting dialogue throughout each 20-minute episode.

This show, about an eight-year-old who makes films and his mother (Paula Poundstone), is more than smart enough to make you wonder why it's on UPN.
