This is Roberts' finest work in years, showcasing not just her toothy-grinned charm, but also the subtle emotional shading she is capable of. Whigham and other supporting cast turn in first-rate performances as well.
Homecoming loads an impressive amount of twisty psychological drama into a half-hour. There are so many hints, cinematic references, clues, red herrings and "easter eggs," it would take multiple viewings to catch them all.
It brilliantly captures the essence of the military compound and Heidi's place in it. And look out for a remarkable long tracking shot that begins on the exterior and somehow brings us in via a large fish tank mounted in a wall...
A full-beam Julia would have unbalanced this curiously compelling 10-part drama, though it remains precarious and unsettling... Square-hair Julia just adds to the sense that something's not quite right.
This is [Julia Roberts'] first major television role, and I understand why she took it: It allows her to do the two things she does best -- to deploy her killer charm and to bare her teeth against an adversary.
With Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail directing, the show has a distinct visual style that sits perfectly with the tense, paranoid mood of the show... Roberts is predictably outstanding as the idealistic Bergman.
Tense as it all is, it's ambiguous enough to keep you guessing - you'd expect nothing less from Esmail - and it's exceedingly well cast. Having Sissy Spacek in a small role as Heidi's mother ranks pretty high on the luxury scale.
