Homecoming: Season 1 Reviews

November 12, 2018
This is [Julia Roberts'] first major television role, and I understand why she took it: It allows her to do the two things she does best -- to deploy her killer charm and to bare her teeth against an adversary.
November 5, 2018
The result is a television series that's frequently breathtaking.

Slow at first, the 10-episode Amazon series finds its groove in later episodes, which explore the kind of provocative themes that make this feel like a Black Mirror installment stretched into miniseries form.
November 2, 2018
It's all suggestion and unease, layered under the sun-dappled sheen of the outside world, and it makes for a smartly compelling disjunction. This world is not what it seems, and we're here to find out why.

November 2, 2018
Every episode of Homecoming, each crisp half-hour installment, is a compact exploitation film, spinning an anxious yarn about systematic abuse.
November 2, 2018
It's dark, but in its way also fun - which is not necessarily to say funny - without straining to be, and suggests human feelings surviving beneath the shellac of too-modern life.
November 2, 2018
It builds momentum even as the first few episodes may seem to meander, and it comes together in a suspenseful thriller with an emotional punch.
November 2, 2018
But even when that final piece of puzzle locks in, we're still left with so many questions and potentially intriguing developments, we already can't wait for season two.

November 2, 2018
This is a well-executed mystery that avoids a lot of the pitfalls of both mystery shows and science-fiction-tinged shows: it's not overdetermined, it's not overcomplicated, and it's not suddenly upending itself.

Homecoming is adapted from a podcast, and while its audio roots show, that's a benefit -- the conversations are very, very important.
November 2, 2018
Every serious conversational exchange lands with remarkable immediacy.
November 2, 2018
Roberts starts to show her incredible range as a performer, turning her emotions on a dime and filling up the small screen with as much magnetism as she ever did on the big one.

Whigham's portrayal of Carrasco is the most compelling. He provides a strong rooting interest as a dogged investigator who's seen as just another nameless underling by his condescending boss.

Whether the focus is Roberts' quiet, darkening subtlety, Whigham's stony determination or Cannavale's sleazy aggression, the performances lift the narrative instead of battling for supremacy.
November 1, 2018
When Roberts goes to those places, I feel her authenticity.
November 1, 2018
The result -- despite minimal action, plenty of confusion and near-constant bleakness -- is a feeling of elation.

There's Roberts, who is superb (and always is).

The series is based on a podcast fictional series created by Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg, who've helped Esmail refashion their audio-based narrative... into a terrific, tightly strung tale of deceit and memory
October 31, 2018
With its lean storytelling, contained plot, and focus on characters as opposed to power structures, it makes chaos feel manageable.
October 31, 2018
These mysteries and more unfold carefully and engagingly under the watch of Esmail and writers Micah Bloomberg and Eli Horowitz. Questions are answered just when they should be and in ways that illuminate the characters rather than undercut them.

October 31, 2018
A thriller that actually earns the word Hitchcockian with a second-half dynamic that alternately echoes Psycho and Vertigo.
October 30, 2018
A truly exceptional series.
October 25, 2018
For the most part, Esmail lets his superb cast tell the story of Heidi's search for answers.
October 24, 2018
Esmail has worked with the creators to reconceive their audio adventure as a visual delight, full of smart performances and lingering unease.

Homecoming is the TV equivalent of a head without a hair out of place.
September 21, 2018
It's a pleasure to see Roberts stretch her legs on TV, particularly in her scenes opposite James, where her heart is most evident. The two clearly have a strong chemistry... and they are surrounded by a fine supporting cast.
September 10, 2018
Even when it gets a little too mesmerized by its own stylistic trickery, it's hard not to get sucked in by "Homecoming's" haunting mission creep.
September 10, 2018
"Homecoming" becomes gleefully angsty. The half-hour episodes fly by, pulsing with jittery excitement that borders on sensory overload.

Homecoming is intriguing as a story, and the self-aware visuals and odd little touches that you'll discover going forward are fun - while at the same time you never lose the sense that something really menacing is about to unfold.
