Critic Reviews for Hoops Season 1

All Critics (14) | Top Critics (6)

A similar lack of follow-through is evident in everything from predictable but unearned character arcs (Ben and Shannon make... zero sense) to the episode titles, which were at one point spiced up with F-bombs.

Aug 25, 2020 | Rating: D | Full Review…

A show that quickly numbs the viewer to the provocative effect of an f-bomb, and simply comes off as trying too hard to be naughty.

Aug 21, 2020 | Full Review…

If Hoops had the courage of its lack of convictions it would be as overtly racist and homophobic as it is sexist. But it doesn't. It confirms its racism and homophobia through tokenism.

Aug 25, 2020 | Rating: 1/5 | Full Review…

While the world could use risqué, adventurous laughs without the fear of reprisal right now, Hoffman's animated series is without adventure or laughs, mostly ending up as banal as an after-dark Hoosiers spoof.

Aug 24, 2020 | Rating: 4/10 | Full Review…

This foulmouthed animated comedy isn't half the joke machine it would need to be in order to justify its total lack of nuance.

Aug 20, 2020 | Full Review…

Mature animated comedy is more foul-mouthed than funny.

Oct 12, 2020 | Rating: 1/5 | Full Review…

The show should've been a slam dunk, but somehow, it clanks off the back rim and fails to score any points through 10 episodes of low-wit comedy.

Aug 22, 2020 | Full Review…

Just funny enough and has enough heart to be a decent show.

Aug 21, 2020 | Full Review…

Hoops is one of those shows that escaped a time capsule from the 2010s and somehow ended up in 2020 where adult animated sitcoms are supposed to be nuanced and FUNNY.

Aug 21, 2020 | Rating: 1/5 | Full Review…

The series is outrageous, funny and it pushes boundaries more than you expect.

Aug 20, 2020 | Rating: 3.5/5 | Full Review…

Most of the humor is aggressively vulgar, a constant stream of swear words and dick jokes that come off as a desperate effort to appear edgy and transgressive.

Aug 20, 2020 | Full Review…

Hoops is a frustrating series in its inaugural season as it's so heavily focused on trying to be shocking by being aggressively crass that its storylines and characters suffer.

funny definitely worth the watch to bad Netflix keeps making bad decisions about their shows like not renewing the trailer park boys

This is just the show we needed in the age of cancel culture. So obviously it got cancelled. Still, the show is pretty fun and clever. But it's not on the level of Rick and Morty or Disenchanted. Just don't let your kids watch it.

I really don't see why there's so much hate on this show. I don't expect a good plot or deep characters in an animated series, that is supposed to be funny overall. I think it does a great job doing the latter, I laughed my ass off about some of the dark jokes. Also the selfmade music is f***ing hilarious 😂 the song about underage boys getting drunk 😂 loved it Also I love to hear nick millers voice again. Hope there will be a season 2 despite the rough criticism

Initially seeing the negative reviews, I was curious to watch Hoops in order to see if those criticrisms were fully justified. Personally and after marathoning all the first season, I think that the series is not for all audiences: is mostly directed to the public that enjoys black humor and that looks for some variation in today's politically correct world. Hoops may fall short in some aspects, but it does not imply that it is AS BAD as some paint it, since as the episodes go by, the story and its characters develops more (although slowly). Even the jokes and situations that arises during the episodes may not make you laugh all the time, but they will make you have a good time. I hope Netflix renews it for a 2nd season, since it has a lot of potential and is proven that a series that initially many classify as bad ends up being good. It's just a matter of giving it time to develop well.

Yikes what the heck did I just watch.
  • Nov 11, 2020
awful : just gratuitous coarse language, repetitions, and the writers think it's enough to be funny or subversive... it's not, there is no «joke» that works in this serie, the story and dialogues are extremely poor, it's boring Like Paradise PD, it's another netflix animated serie totally empty and just trying to take advantage of the success of rick and morty

    Great show. very funny.
  • Oct 21, 2020
This show was the pivotal factor in my decision of whether to renew my Netflix subscription or not.
  • Oct 19, 2020
I love this show, and I think it deserves another season. My favorite joke is the Long Jarby's (a combination Long John Silver/Arby's). What's not to like?
  • Oct 06, 2020
the show is as aimless as pissing in the wind.
