Trouble is, there's not a single surprising twist on any of the threadbare inside-showbiz tropes, and even worse, every single zinger feels like it's from a hastily assembled first draft.

Taking on Spanish-language soap operas, Eva Longoria tries to show the "30 Rock"-like fun that happens behind the scenes. All too often, though, this looks like a "Saturday Night Live" skit that doesn't quite land.

Take a genre that's easily mocked and mock it - not much art in that. At least, not as it's done here.

While Telenovela employs a lot of Latin actors, it doesn't give them enough good lines to make the latest entry in the Too Much Television universe worth your time.

A comedy that strains for fizzy yet comes off as frantic, like so many other network comedies this show wastes great actors -- in particular the divine Eva Longoria -- on bad writing.

Telenovela can be fun, if only the show knew the difference between silly and dumb.

Watching everyone on Telenovela emote every last plot point directly at the camera starts to wear after a while. The effect is rather like being bludgeoned with their sheer desire to be liked.

Telenovela is an Americanized version of a telenovela, and that may be why it doesn't reach its full potential.

The show clearly wants to be like the movie Soapdish, but Telenovela can't quite pull it off. A second episode is considerably less funny than the pilot, a danger sign.
