Fincher stumbles in realizing the profession's 21st-century counterpart. Let's hope future national-desk visits avoid anything as cringe-inducing as the scene in which Zoe's editors marvel at a computer screen, amazed at the concept of page views.

House of Cards is intriguing and exciting.

I'm impressed by the daring of the writing staff, which has done the unthinkable: set up a realistic challenge to a marriage of soul mates.

As a solid, well-executed, oftentimes gorgeously shot series, House Of Cards is a smart move for Netflix.

Series creator Beau Willimon, who wrote the play that became the movie The Ides of March, was once a junior Dean staffer, but he seems to have absorbed only the cheap gesturing, not any actual knowledge of politics.

A middle section of six episodes gradually took hold, but only the final four instalments really made me want to keep watching, thanks chiefly to Corey Stoll's portrayal of self-destruction, a real tragedy, followed by growing tension in the plotting.

It's a compelling show about a slithery Capitol Hill scoundrel, based on a terrific 1990 British miniseries (itself based on a novel), and boasting top-flight talent.

For now, to quote another politician, mission accomplished. And as in D.C., if "House of Cards" is deemed enough of a success by whatever criteria Netflix employs to keep the money flowing, you can bet everybody will get in line.

The production is as sleek and well executed as any you would expect from this caliber of talent, and a match for most high-end cable programs.

House of Cards may not be the best show on television, but it is in the same league as the best shows, and that makes all the difference.

Fans of the original House of Cards - and I'm definitely one of them - may be articularly surprised by the way the season ends, or maybe by the way it doesn't.

House spirals high on a twisted foundation.
