House of Saddam: Miniseries (2008)

House of Saddam

Critics Consensus

House of Saddam is anchored by a commanding peformance from Igal Naor's, but the miniseries offers shallow insight into the fallen tyrant and the history he helped shape.

Any good villain has to be sympathetic enough to be interesting... As played by Naor, Hussein is a credibly flawed person, not merely a monster.

It repeatedly asks viewers to trudge through static, angst-filled sequences in which Hussein, his family, and his generals seethe with aggression, betrayal, and self-destruction.

Naor is not often called upon to explore the character's psychological depths explicitly, which is just as well, as the series goes wobbly whenever the script heads in that direction.

A fascinating man in many ways - a butcher and warmonger who built roads and hospitals and advanced the rights of women... This lavish new four-part BBC drama investigates the rivalry and paranoia endemic throughout his long reign.

Though its often over-wrought content gives the series a made-for-television feel, the slick production values succeed in elevating it above the corny.

For its part, House of Saddam provides little insight into Saddam Hussein. Instead, it repeats truisms about well-reported events, many of them best remembered as TV images...

Although somewhat structurally flawed, House of Saddam still manages to tell a complicated, historical story as an entertaining, political melodrama. It's "Dallas" in the desert with oil as the common commodity.

As disrespectful to his victims as it may be to view The House of Saddam as entertainment, that is the only level where it succeeds.

Requires us to care about personal issues involving la famille Hussein that are actually pretty boring, and it leaves you with no real sense of how inextricably the stuff we're watching on screen was linked with international politics.

It was soap... it was reality, it was cheeky and it was terrifying. Saddam's reign was one of such excess and terror, it was hard to see where reality ended and fiction began.
