How to Be a Gentleman: Season 1 Photos

Tv Season Info

In this odd-couple comedy, a reserved etiquette columnist (David Hornsby) turns to a rough-and-tumble trainer and gym owner (Kevin Dillon) who bullied him in high school to help him adopt a new style. Meanwhile, things aren't helped by Andrew's dominating sister Janet (Mary Lynn Rajskub), who picks on Andrew and her husband, Mike (Rhys Darby). Hornsby created the series, adapting from a non-fiction book by John Bridges.

The question is whether the half-hour is merely humorless or actually offensive.

The cast is an embarrassment of potential, but Dillon is wearing as a Drama-like dude; the cultural-obsession-with-youth trope is old; and the learning-to-be-a-man stuff is pat. It's very meh.

A comedy with a solid core group of characters and a chance to go the distance.

Just stale in every way.

There's some potential with the strong cast, but it's more of a wait-and-see than a must-see.

Unfortunately, it seems this may be a case of a mediocre show happening to good people.

Audience Reviews for How to Be a Gentleman: Season 1

The acting may seem bad towards the beginning, but it's more the directing. But I actually enjoy the show. I think it's funny enough, but also has a good plot and some heart even (Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker are producers, so no surprise there!) It may not be the best show, but it's only 9 episodes, on Netflix, and makes me laugh enough. And I love Mary Lynn Rajskub! I always thought she was pretty funny in 24!
