It’s not as if I think anyone would take this approach at face value, but it’s at best a questionable approach to the material. Go to Full Review

Sometimes clever, sometimes glib, always superficial. Go to Full Review

Designed as a small-screen instruction manual, it provides only cursory snapshots of its chosen areas of interest. Still, as a general overview of such outfits’ bedrock traits and strategies, it certainly knows about which it speaks. Go to Full Review

Like its sister series How to Become a Tyrant, this fast-paced show combines archive footage, animation, and irony-filled narration with the intent of informing viewers about basic cult behavior. Go to Full Review

While it feels a little more average than most true-crime documentaries, it is still filled with information and insight. There are a lot of serious themes covered across the series. Go to Full Review

The format of How To Become A Cult Leader isn’t quite as grating as its predecessor, How To Become A Tyrant, and that leaves room for the show to provide a lot of information about how the cult leaders it’s profiling managed to wield so much influence. Go to Full Review

Amir S 11/17/2024 Less interesting than its predecessor, but still reasonable to watch. See more Drew L 11/13/2024 I enjoyed this format for How to Become a Tyrant. I read some reviews of that show that were interesting about how it focused on tyrants that weren’t endorsed by the west and about how it was a really good introduction but about how it could go deeper in certain ways. I’m not sure if going history book deep would work with the format, but doing a 2nd season on tyrannical leaders that did have western support would round out some of the criticisms of season 1. In regards to How to Become a Cult Leader, it wasn’t terrible. But it didn’t have the same gravity, and when you put the sardonic humor right after victims speaking, it feels more punch-downy than I assume they were aiming for. You don’t have the same problem with the tyrant topic because it’s a general overview of the impact on millions, not firsthand accounts of a small group of victims, which I think requires a more delicate approach. I assume after the poor response to the cult topic and the mob topic Netflix will just kill it, but I’d say go back to what worked with tyrants without pulling any punches on western complicity. Then you’ll see the more positive audience response you’re looking for. See more Heather M @HeatherM 08/02/2024 The things that happened were horrific and barbaric. Its flippant and jokey presentation is completely inappropriate for the subject matter, a missed opportunity. See more Robert H @Rwhobbs198 08/04/2023 Questionable presentation in terms of selecting it's topics which each expertise in an area that provides the building blocks per each episode to be a Cult Leader. While it's somewhat informative it's mostly just cheesy narration and graphics that makes it hard to want to follow. I'd much rather watch a true documentary on each individual. See more Sarah Z 07/29/2023 I think the episodes should have been longer and tell us more about each cult. See more Bobby K @ZenCipher 07/29/2023 Where to start? Bad concept. Not really a subject you take a light hearted approach to. Everything about it feels off. Great subject material. Terrible execution of sharing it. See more Read all reviews
