Documentary filmmaker John Wilson embarks on an odyssey of self-discovery and cultural observation by covertly filming the lives of fellow New Yorkers while trying to share advice. John attempts to give advice while dealing with his own personal issues. The episodes, framed as tutorials and filmed mainly on the streets of New York City, cover topics from small talk to scaffolding. While each episode initially focuses on its title topic, in the course of his investigation, Wilson meets people and strikes up conversations that lead in unpredictable directions.

Yes, some viewers will find all this a bit too eccentric, but those who stick with it have an idiosyncratic treat in store. Go to Full Review

How To with John Wilson... has captured New York’s tapestry of oddballs nearly as well as I can imagine by taking a more nonchalant approach, letting the city’s street theater unfold in the background as John Wilson pursues his various preoccupations. Go to Full Review

Greg K @GregZ 09/21/2023 This mix of social investigation, anatomising of the Zeitgeist (of a certain US mindeset to be clear), metaphoric narrating and intimate biography is the Holy Grail for gen YouTube. See more Green C @Green804 08/26/2023 Quirky, weird, sometimes too graphic but incredibly unique and eye-opening. Sorry to see the end of this ingenious series. See more Susan J @CallMeLulu 08/19/2023 This was such a brilliant, creative, entertaining, original weird show for the first 2 seasons. Now it feels like a re-tread. Same thing happened with Painting with John, Winning Time, The Righteous Germstones, White Lotus, and eventually Barry. The initial spark died off and HBO paid him a lot to keep it going, but nothing he does in Season 3 feels honestly openly curious and filled with wonder. It feels heavy, 2 of the episodes had to do with poo and vomit and bathrooms stuff--just reaching for the bottom, so to speak. The episode on team sports is patronizing and dull. Seriously? We know this guy is a weirdo dweeb but we liked him until now--but he's claiming disingenuously he has no idea how the game of baseball or soccer is played? And he's heavyhanded, which he never was before, with his opinion of Those People. I'm not much into team sports but I don't hate people who do, or pretend that axe throwing or watching some lame-o sing a tone for 2 minutes and 40 seconds is any more worthwhile, and in fact is elevated, and people into sports are DUM. He never stooped to such linear judgmental conclusions in the past. It makes the show tedious. And he morphs from loveable misfit to annoying oddball complaining crank. See more Read all reviews
