Critics Consensus

Propelled by a strong cast and even stronger sense of justice, Hunters' stylish first season doesn't always hit the mark, but when it does, it strikes pulpy paydirt.

Critic Reviews for Hunters Season 1

All Critics (104) | Top Critics (36)

"Hunters" lives in a state of emergency, which necessitates action more than it mirrors reality. It's an effective, fictionalized premise, but one that's also dependent on the viewer being able to enjoy a particularly harsh blend of fact and fiction.

[T]he show is audacious, tonally complex, not always in control of its message, visually arresting, and, particularly in its grim flashbacks to the brutalities and the courage in the death camps, moving.

At times, it embraces its B-movie style, making for a show that can be very clever and fun, but it's also exhausting, occasionally aggressive in its toxicity.

"Hunters"' - to be clear - is a genre series and within that context, it's good, occasionally very good.

What's most maddening about Hunters is that much of it works in individual pieces, even though the whole is a sweaty, overseasoned smorgasbord.

Pacino, in a rare TV series role, is the marquee name here. But Logan Lerner's Jonah is the show's backbone.

Weil and crew ... keep the moral gray areas of its characters front and center, which makes all the giddy kitsch of Hunters worthwhile.

Feb 18, 2020 | Rating: B+ | Full Review…

It's a comic-book-like show with often dumb dialogue, and it's too slow. But with Pacino aboard, it's worth checking out.

Feb 18, 2020 | Full Review…

Hunters does a lot of work to quickly give several characters layers before it expands its world and it's going to be thrilling to see how all the pieces mesh together.

Feb 18, 2020 | Full Review…

The episodes move at a remarkable clip, using its momentum to say so much about humanity during its hours while also providing a great revenge tale.

Feb 18, 2020 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

The show's clunky blend of comedy, horror and commentary is a mess even Al Pacino can't save.

Feb 17, 2020 | Rating: 1.5/4 | Full Review…

Periodically grappling with legacy, heritage, guilt, conscience, and the morality of payback "justice," none of it is very effective and even less meaningful when juxtaposed next to the superficial cool violence and hip jokes, or ghastly forms of torture.

Audience Reviews for Hunters: Season 1

Very entertaining with some historical references

Very rotten. Story tries too hard to be menacing in all the wrong places. Everyone trying to be a badass in a bad way. Trivializes the holocaust. Revenge porn without the appeal

Embarrassing. Impossible to get through the whole season.

Quite interesting tv series; very well acted and with many points to think of. The plot and its twists create a very well rounded piece. The hot topic seems to be soften by irony and using a comic-like style in the cinematography, failing at times. Beyond some bits being too unconsidered or pushing too much, the tv series enters a taboo topic (well or badly, up to you). Season 1 seems to conclude itself quite fully, but a second season would be interesting

Amazon's new series about 1970's Nazi hunters is a wild ride. "Hunters" has one of the best opening sequences out there and keeps the audience invested until the closing credits. Al Pacino (as Myer Offerman) is great (as always). My favorite quote from him: "Living well is not the best revenge. Revenge is the best revenge." The supporting cast is also excellent. Standouts include killer nun Sister Harriet (Kate Mulvany) and married weapons experts Morty and Mindy (Saul Rubinek and Carol Kane)-. There has been some controversy around the show (especially the human chess scenes). Creator David Weir says he wrote this story as a homage to his own grandparents who survived the concentration camps. I too am confused about how real life tragedies should be handled when they're converted into entertainment. Do shows like "Inglorious Bastards" or "The Man In The High Castle" belittle the real life suffering of millions of people (or do they impress upon younger viewers the horrors of the past)? I'm not sure what the answer is. I do think we need to look at the show's genre though. "Hunters" is not meant to be a documentary. It's a drama with grindhouse elements (and some comedy thrown in). And grindhouse movies such as Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof are completely over the top with gore and violence. All things considered, I still very much enjoyed "Hunters". In troubling times, this revenge fantasy is just what the doctor ordered.

Good plot and characters, final plot twist predictable but still: WOW. That's one of the best shows out there. Al Pacino slays and only in the end you will fully understand his words and choices throughout the season. Hope there will be a season two, there is so much left to say.

Best plot twist I think I've ever seen in a TV series. So worth the watch!

Another "Average" show from Amazon. Right up there on the Average scale with, Jack Ryan, Carnival Row and The Man in the High Castle. I finally gave up on this show after 7 episodes. It has some good moments, but then it bored me. I literally fell asleep on a nightly basis due to being bored. Amazon needs to step up their game in this Golden Age of TV.

Even after 5 episodes, it was on the wrong rail and getting worst by the episodes. finally on the 9th it derailed and suffice to say never may recover for the 2nd series. All the pomp and pageant before releasing the series vanished into thin blue air . Finally, the shame, insurmountable harm state that this puts the Jews into and the other dramatized series of the holocaust, the Nazi hunts will ever make a fair equilibrium ?

An intriguing and exciting story for 9 episodes... completely went off the rails in the season finale. Al Pacino's character was shamelessly undermined by an illogical and nonsensical plot twist. I was left shaking my head for the remainder of the episode as I saw a set of compelling characters and a captivating action-packed thriller completely unravel without any consideration for character or story continuity.
