I Am the Night: Miniseries Reviews

Pine gets lots to chew on while the makeup department is taxed to keep up with his various cuts and bruises. In that respect he's served a full plate. Too bad that too much of this is either overcooked or under-prepared.

There's a fearful intelligence and stubborn innocence in Eisley's portrayal of the Fauna.

It's a tale full of intrigue, scandal, and murder, presented with a middlebrow prestige-sleaze gloss that should really hit the spot for Twin Peaks fans who felt the third season could have used less metaphysics and more cherry pie.

I Am the Night is a low-rent Chinatown-like series that's gratuitously old-hat, but pretty watchable despite a tortured self-awareness of its own decrepitude.

In some ways, I Am the Night is too much - and not enough - of a good thing.

Despite the absence of a badge, Singletary might be the truest detective on television. There's a refreshing honesty to his trashiness.

That there's any emotional heft can be largely credited to Pine, pushing a bloody boulder up a neon-lit hill. But in the end, it's all as empty as the hollow paintings of a soulless man.

It succeeds in elevating the best in the talent resurrecting a piece of it, proving that with enough time, even the gruesome displays of humanity can be rendered into ethereal distractions.

Fans of L.A. noir may feel underserved by "I Am the Night," yet they can spend a few episodes at least enjoying the vibe and the view. As with all L.A. stories, the view counts for something.

Those looking for answers about the Dahlia murder will find one hypothesis and accuracy at least from Fauna's perspective. The series' historical speculation is just dirty and plausible enough for the story

Night isn't great L.A. Noir - the plot moves at corpse speed - but it's a vivid TV treat, filmed in real locations haunted by history that might just be too weird for basic cable.

Inventions don't equal inventiveness, though, and everything about the Los Angeles mystery story feels reheated.
January 28, 2019
I Am the Night" is merely the latest drama devoted to the Dahlia case that, like the LAPD's original investigation, has failed to produce a satisfying outcome.
January 28, 2019
"I Am the Night" is the rare case where the series actually lives up to the publicity buildup, establishing itself as a must-see TV drama in a crowded field.
January 25, 2019
It boasts a terrific lead performance from Chris Pine, but the story's much too slow to get going and doesn't deliver enough payoff to merit the wait.

If only the writing played to these strengths. True story or not, I Am the Night too often resembles an oversimplified version of the 1974 classic Chinatown...
January 25, 2019
The parts of the TV drama that stick closest to the facts are the most satisfying, and the two lead performances are equally strong.
January 24, 2019
Even though the limp script leaves something to be desired, I Am the Night succeeds in terms of mood and sense of place.
January 23, 2019
Writer Sam Sheridan, adapting Fauna Hodel's autobiography, and director Patty Jenkins...sweep the viewer into their milieu from the very first shot.
January 17, 2019
It's hard to argue the merits of a slick thriller starring a talent such as Pine, even when it gets carried away. Sometimes, after all, getting carried away by a magnetic mystery is exactly the point.
January 16, 2019
May be a little too formulaic to be TV's next limited series with maximum impact, but it's well positioned to deliver the kind of entertainment that overly serious fare often overlooks.

After watching five of its six hours, I can't tell you whose storyI Am the Nightthinks it is, nor the mystery it thinks it's unfolding.
