These details might seem superfluous, but as many of the series' interview subjects observe, the killer seemed possessed by a desire to desecrate and ruin the domestic solidarity of couples like Oswalt and McNamara.

"I'll Be Gone in the Dark" is a compelling, flawed story of true crime and obsession - and its flaws are part of what make it so intriguing.

Even if you're among the legion of crime addicts and nonfiction readers who think you know the story inside out, you will find moments in director Liz Garbus's series that will make you gasp nonetheless.

It doesn't have all the answers - no one does - but it asks the right questions in the right way.

You come away from this production thinking of McNamara not just as an author, detective, wife, mother, and friend but as a rare individual who was able to treat human experiences as a series of mirrors that she could hold up to each person she met.

The docuseries is also a fitting eulogy for McNamara, who didn't live to see justice served but lives on in this dueling narrative of compelling timelines.

But while the individual components of I'll Be Gone in the Dark can work to remarkable, devastating effect, the sprawl of this approach can find the two stories working against one another as often as they're complementary.

There are affecting moments scattered throughout "I'll Be Gone in the Dark." The best way to watch it, though, might be to record the whole thing and zap through certain parts -- doing the editing, essentially, that the filmmakers didn't.

The series works as a near-perfect example of how to manage several concurrent themes, tangents and narratives at the same time, while never once failing to captivate the viewer.
June 26, 2020
The uncomfortable truth is that McNamara's story doesn't give Garbus the elements she needs to make the larger tapestry she's weaving come together.
June 25, 2020
If the aspects of the story pertaining to the Golden State Killer feel, here, the stuff of formula -- one imagines the ideal delivery system to be McNamara's book -- the story of McNamara herself is told with crisp elegance.

The more procedural parts of "I'll Be Gone in the Dark" are fascinating.
June 24, 2020
Those who can't stand the suspense can employ McNamara's tool of choice -- Google -- to learn the current disposition of the case. For those with an affinity for tension, I'll Be Gone in the Dark will provide plenty.
June 23, 2020
This core of respect for shared humanity differentiates Garbus' as well as McNamara's tellings from so much true crime storytelling, and justifies weaving the personal into the procedural.
June 22, 2020
Garbus seizes the torch that McNamara left behind in focusing on the survivors - how they might have been better protected, and how they suffered for decades.
