In true soap-opera style, everything that can go wrong does, and everyone is being blackmailed or conniving or lusting or about to be betrayed. And many pages of dialogue could have been cut with no harm done.

The production not only has the makings of a lengthy and addictive run, but proves something of a metaphor for the protracted, sorry tale of British adventures in India.
