Insatiable: Season 1 Reviews
Where do we even start with this fatsuit-to-skinny teen show?
Full Review | Apr 28, 2021
The premiere is a hodgepodge of fluctuating accents, conflicting tones and clunky exposition, which is a pretty accurate representation of the series as a whole.

[Insatiable] lacks dimension, its characters are unsteady on their narrative feet and while it might seem funny, irreverent and boundary-pushing at times, it lacks those characteristics in enough volume to sustain itself.

The performers are fine, but they are left hanging by the script, as it drifts in and out of confusion.

Satire isn't easy to pull off, but if you're going to make a TV show where the premise rides a very thin line between okay and offensive, then maybe pare it down a little and focus on the parts you want to come through.

Despite its creators' clear talent and smarts, Insatiable doesn't deliver what any of us are really hungry for. Instead, its telling of the same, cruel, unfunny joke added to the cacophony of bullying to which we've all become too accustomed.

Satire is hard to get right -- and many of the choices this well-meaning series makes renders its particular take particularly hard to swallow.

Broadly cynical about pageants. It's cynical about everything... Beyond that, though, Insatiable has no clear intention.

Sparky supporting roles are enjoyably absurd, played by ace scene-stealers.

If Insatiable only stuck to this ridiculous premise and went balls-to-the-wall camp, it might have worked. Instead it tries to infuse wokeness, horror, satire, and teen melodrama all into one.

The writers of Insatiable have never met a stereotype they don't love, whether they're portraying fatness or queerness or Blackness or pretty much anything else.

We need storylines with fat characters that have nothing to do with being fat, storylines about overcoming obstacles from being fat, while remaining fat. And that is precisely what Insatiable has failed to do.

I can say with certainty this is the worst show I will watch in 2018. It's offensive, it's vulgar, and it doesn't even tell a compelling story.

Insatiable's campy shallows disguise occasional depths of emotion, moments that register all the more effectively for their rarity.

I made it through four episodes. More power to you if you can stomach the season's other eight.

The character and her backstory are lazily filled in - the glib shorthand for her inner pain is her binge-eating. And without that foundation, what follows just seems hateful and random.

You can certainly make something provocative and funny about our obsession with body image, perceptions of beauty and the shameless world of pageants, but Insatiable never really tries.

Insatiable is trying, clearly, to position itself as a subversive dark comedy, but it's just not smart or well-written enough to be considered such. It's clumsy and careless with its subject matter and, as a result, struggles to find its tone.

It's wrong on so many levels it all but runs out of levels to be wrong on.

On the one hand, it's a guilty pleasure if you love dark comedies. On the other hand, it's also a tonal mess that bounced around too often to deliver the emotional punch it wanted to achieve.
