Instinct: Season 1 (2018)

Critic Consensus: Instinct is ultimately an underwhelming police procedural, despite having Alan Cumming in its arsenal.

Tv Season Info

Dr. Dylan Reinhart (Alan Cumming) has settled into a life of retirement from the CIA and spends his days writing books, teaching at university, and being husband to lawyer/bar-owner Andrew Wilson (Daniel Ings). However, things become more hectic for Reinhart when NYPD Detective Lizzie Needham (Bojana Novakovic) seeks his help in a case – which involves a serial killer using Reinhart's book as their playbook for murder. The cast for the first season of "Instinct" includes Naveen Andrews as Julian Cousins, Sharon Leal as Lt. Jasmine Gooden, Michael B. Silver as Sgt. Kanter Harris, Danny Mastrogiorgio as Det. Anthony Fucci, and Whoopi Goldberg as Joan Ross.

Cumming's talents are ill-used...

By-the-numbers procedural with a pair of appealing leads. Otherwise, by-the-book bland.

The setup isn't groundbreaking, but Cumming's character, who has a husband, Andy (Daniel Ings), who'd rather he stuck to academia, is, if only for the matter-of-factness of that one biographical detail.

With mischievous charm, Cumming freshens a premise familiar from "The Mentalist," "Castle" and "Elementary."

If predictable drama is your choice, this is adequate Monday night fodder.

Alan Cumming playing the first openly gay lead in a CBS crime drama? What's not to like? Unfortunately, just the script, the plot, the pacing and most of the other characters.

File under promising, if somewhat predictable.

Cumming deserves a much better starring vehicle than this.
