Critic Reviews for Instinct Season 1

Cumming's talents are ill-used...

Mar 16, 2018 | Rating: C | Full Review…

By-the-numbers procedural with a pair of appealing leads. Otherwise, by-the-book bland.

Mar 16, 2018 | Rating: 2/4 | Full Review…

The setup isn't groundbreaking, but Cumming's character, who has a husband, Andy (Daniel Ings), who'd rather he stuck to academia, is, if only for the matter-of-factness of that one biographical detail.

Mar 16, 2018 | Full Review…

With mischievous charm, Cumming freshens a premise familiar from "The Mentalist," "Castle" and "Elementary."

Mar 15, 2018 | Full Review…

... [Instinct] tries to capture Castle-style charm but mostly falls flat. Cumming, however, is always a treat, and does his best to elevate the show.

Mar 19, 2018 | Full Review…

Instinct's refusal to discuss real issues renders it exactly what Alan Cumming said he wanted to avoid: remarkable only for having gay lead.

Aug 9, 2019 | Rating: 3.00/5 | Full Review…

Instinct isn't always very good, but that's what makes it special. [Full Review in Spanish]

Jun 28, 2018 | Full Review…

If predictable drama is your choice, this is adequate Monday night fodder.

Jun 22, 2018 | Full Review…

Alan Cumming playing the first openly gay lead in a CBS crime drama? What's not to like? Unfortunately, just the script, the plot, the pacing and most of the other characters.

Jun 14, 2018 | Full Review…

File under promising, if somewhat predictable.

Jun 6, 2018 | Full Review…

Cumming deserves a much better starring vehicle than this.

Apr 4, 2018 | Full Review…

Silly, fluffy throwback mystery show goes down easy.

Audience Reviews for Instinct: Season 1

  • Nov 21, 2020
Poorly written. Dialogue is force and not real. Actors seemed more interested in attempting to pose than actually act or interact. I was looking forward to this show. Most I blame on the writers and the director. Do not expect a logical flow in developing the case. You get through 75% of the show to suddenly get leaps in logic. The plot has more whole than swiss cheese.

I love the show! Wish they had more episodes in a season.
  • Sep 16, 2019
Just dreadful. Terrible acting and a dodgy US accent from a UK actor.
  • Sep 08, 2019
    It was a good show❤️
  • Aug 12, 2019
    A bad one-off from Elementary.
  • Aug 04, 2019
    Thought it was pretty good
  • May 01, 2019
Clever, inventive plots, brilliant casting, better than average acting. What is not to like?
  • Oct 25, 2018
A show I don't want to stop, I enjoy the way it's formatted and the mystery going on throughout the series. I also love how the relationships work in this series, it's not the mains falling for each other and the main man has a wonderful healthy relationship with his partner which is wonderful to see on the tv. The show touches on various topics which can be hard but it is relatable and they present them realistically in my opinion.

As a British viewer, I thought this was excellent
  • Aug 01, 2018
The show is growing on me... a gentle cop/detective show. I like the rather unusual premise... like Alan Cummings and Bojana Novakovic... I do find the characters of Dylan and Andy lacking chemistry. Lizzie and Julian easier to imagine. I hope the show continues to grow and meld over the next 13 episodes.
