AMC's goal for "Into the Badlands" was twofold: produce a compelling character drama, and introduce the highest caliber of martial arts filmmaking to a weekly, ongoing series. Left in the hands of creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar ("Shanghai Noon," "Smallville"), the series stars Daniel Wu as ruthless, prodigiously skilled warrior Sunny, who mentors teenage boy M.K. during a spiritual journey across a feudal civilization known as the Badlands. With the help of trained assassins like Sunny, the area is ruled by rival barons, and for decades Quinn has consistently outflanked and outmaneuvered his fellow barons to keep the upper hand. His invincibility, however, begins to fade in light of brazen attacks by the newest baron, The Widow, who believes M.K. is the key to her success. As the battle for control of the Badlands heats up, the destinies of the stoic assassin and the impetuous teenager become intertwined.

Badlands" is a wilder, richer adventure in every respect, while also engaging with big themes about what it means to be a good person in a terrible world. And it does it with a beautiful and blood-soaked style all its own. Go to Full Review

It's a devastating moment, the emotional impact compounded by the length of Sunny's journey. He came so far, and yet he couldn't save Veil. Go to Full Review

After a 15 month hiatus perfecting its special techniques, Into The Badlands is more confident, more colourful, more eccentric, more comedic, and much more violent. Go to Full Review

Into the Badlands delivers Hong Kong style martial arts on a level that would make Jet Li and Yuen Woo-Ping nod their heads. Go to Full Review

It isn't the greatest show: it's campy, the politics can be dull, and the acting is often stilted and awkward. But the action is consistently incredible. Go to Full Review

Slick R @SlickReviewer 08/26/2024 People out here don't realize just how elite the fight choreography is on this show. Especially with the swords. The only other show that rivals Into The Badlands with the fighting choreo was "Warrior" which was originally on Cinemax, then moved to HBO. All these reviewers rating it so low would rather watch their lame Star Wars series with the worst fighting ever. It's like Disney refused to hire the best sword/light saber choreographers for their $500 million budget series. And yes, I am saying that Into The Badlands fight scenes blow away any fight sequences in any Star Wars movie or series, and even better than big budget franchises like John Wick and Jason Statham movies. It's rare that you get a show where almost every actor on the show fights at an elite level, or at least the camera angles make it seem that way... Regarding the story line it's a little cheesy, but the fighting more than makes up for it IMO. See more Antoniofranco D @decafoto2 08/06/2023 A very cheap production, with no original ideas, bad acting, and over the top action sequences See more Enlightened D 07/19/2023 Never made it past the 6th episode of the second season because the story got caught in molasses, repeating the same circumstances. The first season was awesome though. See more Johnathon W @Hoppynsc 06/16/2023 Fun expansion on the series that actually sees the world outside the Badlands along with some nice additions to the cast. The returning cast are all solid though the scene stealer is the great Nick Frost as the mysterious Bajie, a rogue who continues to surprise you at every turn when he is not making hilarious comments, along with showing off some solid fighting skills. Behind the camera, the show runners deliver a a nice expansion on the shows mythology. While the fact guns don't exist in a world with electricity and gasoline still doesn't quite work, it leads to some cool fights and aesthetics, making for a fun watch throughout. See more Jonathan K @NojEsco 07/27/2022 With a larger scope, higher stakes, faster pacing, genuine levity and an EXCELLENT co-starring role played by Nick Frost, Season 2 of Into The Badlands is exactly what I wanted from the first. Much of this might have been because of the higher budget, such as improved sets and more varied landscapes, but beyond that everything is far more epic, far more intense, the plot more labyrinthine (but never too complicated) and the quieter moments more meaningful. Sunny is great when bouncing off Bajie, the two working almost like a double-act between the killer and the semi-genius/semi-moron, and Tilda, the adorable killing machine, gets a lot of moments to shine as well, her character showing some serious amounts of agency, as well as the performance being far more nuanced. Season 1 was too subdued and Season 3 is almost out of control, so Season 2 is genuinely the apex of this series, and a great testament to how great Western-made Martial Arts entertainment can be, when the thought and effort are both actively accounted for. See more 01/20/2022 The story is horrible. It insults the intelligence of the viewer. See more Read all reviews
