iZombie is a delightfully ironic take on the horror genre. While as a police procedural it's far more Veronica Mars than Rookie Blues.

Show creator Rob Thomas' touch on iZombie is a marriage of his tenacious super-sleuth Veronica Mars and his irrepressible love god Cupid (remember that 2009 Jeremy Piven gem?) with just the right mix of sleuthing and snogging.

The supernatural elements are woven through real world experiences and mystery series conventions, which gives the show a lighter tone and a very different take on the undead than The Walking Dead and its ilk.

There's never been a series quite like this one: a self-mocking mash-up of zombie thriller, detective show and single-girl-in-the-city comedy.

Liv is quippy, snarky and immediately likable.

In the '90s, we had Buffy. In the aughts, we had Veronica Mars. Now, we have the brain-eating, crime-solving doctor Liv Moore of iZombie.

The CW's Seattle neo-noir boasts plenty of both to please zombie aficionados, but it also proves that creators - in this case the Veronica Mars team of Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright - needn't go "grimdark" to be urgently existential.

It offers countless opportunities for zombie puns, and that's a show I can get behind.

The quirky police procedural formula combines good writing, well-placed humor, and of course, zombie creepiness in a way that makes the unconventional show entertainingly lively.

The real reason this new series is looking like a winner is the dazzling wit behind every joke and one-liner. It's a smart show for smart people, if you can handle the fast talk.

There's clearly good raw material here, and a star in McIver who can deliver Thomas and Ruggiero-Wright's dialogue.

Happily, McIver is a charmer and, more importantly, a skilled quipper.

It even uses comic-book-style illustrations and graphics at the start of some scenes. But one can enjoy this show without channeling one's inner fanboy.

The show isn't all lighthearted humor, but the combination of case-of-the-week crime-solving, sincere drama and dry, witty humor makes for an addictive blend.

McIver is a great, unlikely heroine. You'll immediately be rooting for her.

The pop culture universe might not need another zombie story, but I'm glad it's got this one all the same.

The show has a nice sense of detail and a comic puckishness that every zombie police procedural needs.

iZombie is relatively light on gore but not light on action. With its deft mix of humor, heart and, well, brains, this new series could work for both the CW set and the CBS crowd.

iZombie offers a cute concept clinging to a stale procedural, spine that's improved by an unexpected serialized element hinted at in the premiere and expanded upon in the second episode.
