Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Season 1 Reviews

August 31, 2018
Still, Amazon's Jack Ryan succeeds by spinning a suspenseful, big budget adventure around terrorism around the blandness hero in the business.

If Jack Ryan is the white male superhero we must rely on to save the world, it'd be nice to know him a little better. It'd be nice to spend less time stuck inside his inescapable dread.

Oh, how I wish I could tell you that this show - which has two leads who have been quite beloved on The Office and The Wire respectively - finds a way to rise above the firefights and explosions and terrorism tropes that are part of the genre.

It's a smart show, for all its huffing and puffing. Mr. Krasinski might even grow on you.
August 31, 2018
If the cinematic Ryans of the 1990s couldn't fully sell his incompetence, Krasinski's version of the character makes a more convincing case that it's his brains, not his combat skills, that set him apart as an American hero.

Mr. Krasinski is the face of "Jack Ryan," and he's a pleasure to watch.
March 11, 2019
Ultimately another expensive-looking but just so-so series.
March 11, 2019
Its strength lies in its awareness that the war on terror is after all, a terror too.
January 10, 2019
Despite Krasinski's woodenness, the series still manages to be engaging.

With strong performances from Krasinski and Wendell Pierce plus Abbie Cornish, Dina Shihabi, a slimy agency bureaucrat played by Timothy Hutton, and a complexly constructed villain portrayed by Ali Suliman, this Jack Ryan plants his own flag.

The storytelling is so painfully predictable that the series should have been called 'You Do Know Jack.'

[The] series succeeds on the sheer charisma and likability of star John Krasinski alongside his solid chemistry with co-star Wendell Pierce.

Not nearly enough time is spent bolstering the relationship between Ryan and Greer, but it's when they finally find themselves spending more of it together that the show lights up.

Nice to see Krasinski back on the small screen.

Jack Ryan has proven to be one of those new, streaming dramas that truly draws you in, making it impossible to take breaks in between each episode.
September 13, 2018
It's a bit of a shame, because whenever the show stops running around half-apologizing for its existence and trying to prove it's cool kid cred with F-bombs, it actually works.
September 13, 2018
Like the Clancy books dads have been getting en masse for Christmas since the 1980s, the television adaptation ticks quite a lot of undeniably satisfying boxes.
September 12, 2018
The most moving moments in the three episodes provided for review come from this side of the story, not Ryan's - which is refreshing, but suggests we might also need more from our protagonist.

This eight-parter has a whole new storyline, one not based on one of Clancy's books, and it's a good one... I got hooked right away.
September 7, 2018
Krasinski's Jack Ryan is serviceable, but also shallow and lacking in the flaws and complexities that could make the role sing.
August 31, 2018
Ryan may be the shallowest figure here, an assemblage of reactions and attitudes more than a person we get to know - or seem to get to know, which is all the same in television.
August 31, 2018
Despite the presence of co-creator Carlton Cuse of "Lost," a show that was nothing if not singular in conception and execution, "Jack Ryan" is generic.
August 30, 2018
Despite the worthwhile elements that Jack Ryan possesses, the whole thing feels a bit too much like a sheep in wolf's clothing.

Diagnosing a global epidemic of post-traumatic stress disorder, it forbids jingoism. Its skepticism about American power is true to the outlook of a character who, in earlier installments, rose above the petty paradigms of his own government.
