It's a decent idea, but the problem is that once they get there, they just perform their old roles again. And that was so uninteresting five years ago that half the show's final season audience didn't even stick around until the season finale.

Family Vacation is more fun than the last three seasons of Jersey Shore and nowhere near as insane as the first three seasons of Jersey Shore, so I would grade it a B.

A rare reality series where people are actually allowed to change and evolve, a reliable source of profoundly stupid hi-jinks, and a big-hearted tribute to family and friendship.

It's just enough to make the show as juicy and addictive as its original run, but it's also different enough that it doesn't feel like a boring retread. It ends up being a fascinating text in watching a reality.

There is enough here for Jersey Shore fans to savor and celebrate, mostly in the form of Snooki, but also in the sheer audacity of using a talking sex doll to stand in for Sammi, who is the only cast member missing this time around.

The Jersey Shore's cast members fortunes are linked, whether they like it or not, and it is part of their general good humor that they mostly like it, or convincingly pretend to.
