Creature Shop Challenge is inviting enough to merit another look. Not for its pro forma adherence to the "reality competition" handbook, but for whatever creative hoops await its very eager group of contestants.

We don't just watch art being made, we come to understand the process. While also seeing players throw each other under the bus.

Unlike in some competition shows, where there just aren't that many ways to sew a dress, the creative process here is fascinating, from concept to execution.

The judges do a credible job of articulating what works and doesn't, but the genuine lack of drama or suspense denies viewers any rooting interest, which leaves one's curiosity level for the process itself to determine watchability.

It's pure joy to watch talented people create incredible Jim Henson-like creatures -- and, of course, sometimes fail to do that well.

What Creature Shop may lack in originality it makes up for in creative energy.

One wishes Creature Shop Challenge attempted to innovate just a little. Still, better a flawed creative competition series than another reality show about people behaving badly.

Their genuine excitement over their work makes it fun to watch their design process, and, in so doing, you're treated to a fascinating glimpse of how these amazing effects are done by talented artists for TV shows and movies.
