Jonah From Tonga: Season 1 Photos

Tv Season Info

Jonah From Tonga takes us on an adventurous journey into the life of 14-year-old rebellious schoolboy Jonah Takalua, his family, friends and the crew of teachers and counsellors who are exhaustively trying to help him channel his seemingly limitless energy into bigger and brighter things. When we last caught up with Jonah he was expelled from Summer Heights High causing his father Rocky to banish him back to his native Tonga to teach him a hard life lesson. After serving his time in the Kingdom, his father and Aunty decide to start a brand new life for the boy with "magical eyes" at Holy Cross - a Catholic high school in Sydney's western suburbs. Jonah might be in a brand new school but he's quick to mark his familiar territory and establishes a gang of like-minded kids who are friendly with all except The Rangas. Under the watchful eye of his teachers and the school's youth worker, Jonah finds it harder to rebel, but he is never one to shy away from a challenge. It's not long until he's up to his old tricks and the Tongan troublemaker once again finds himself in plenty of hot water. With stacks of fights, frenemies, break-dancing and law-breaking Jonah From Tonga is definitely one big wild ride.

Although Jonah from Tonga has drawn criticism for its overblown take on Tongan culture, it's not the first time show creator Chris Lilley has courted controversy -- and it likely won't be the last.

Lilley continues to find fresh humor, serving up the kinds of eye-rolling laughs and one-liners you'll be quoting for weeks.

The good news is, this was much funnier than Ja'mie: Private School Girl, the disappointing first spin-off from Lilley's cult mockumentary Summer Heights High.

It feels authentic, but after three hours it's like you've been sat next to him on a long coach journey and you basically want to shove him out of the emergency exit, however tragic his back-story.
