It makes sense that the universe of the show has gotten broader and the secondary characters have grown... But it's increasingly at the expense of the star of the show, who even on an off day is a fascinating, prickly creation.
Where once it was the mix of cat-and-mouse tension, glamour and the mundane that made this show so exciting, now it's tipped too far in favour of swagger, smarm and tryhard quirkiness.
Possibly the most chaotic and disconnected episode of the season (or even the whole series.)... Villanelle doesn't know who she is or what she's doing anymore. And neither, apparently, do the series' writers.
It's fast-paced and eventful, but very little is actually resolved. By the time the credits roll, "Beautiful Monster" feels more like a prologue to the coming finale than a satisfying episode in its own right.
Beautiful Monster fails to carry the momentum that the last few episodes have established. It ends with more questions than answers.
All I can think about is how no one dies on Killing Eve anymore. Some of that is thematic, but considering the show is populated with more killers than ever before, it unfortunately feels like something of a referendum on the show's potency.
It led to a very rare and well-earned release by Carolyn when she trashed her living room. Apparently some people would rather throw vases and smash things than be hugged by their daughters, which all seems very on-brand for that character.
Yep, the cat-and-mouse game takes a professed backseat, while the grim reaper takes three swipes with one deadly success.
While "Beautiful Monster" is an action-packed hour, with plenty of twists, near-misses and a truly stellar soundtrack, it feels more than a little bit hollow in the end.
The series has successfully regained focus and recaptured what made it a cut above the other shows on TV.
Aw, I love it when my babies enact violence together! The cat-and-mouse game continued as Villanelle and Eve had another very close encounter near the end of the episode. So close and yet so far!
