Critics Consensus

It may be a little dated in its portrayal of women, but Kingdom offers a new, well-acted take on the boxing genre.

Critic Reviews for Kingdom Season 1

All Critics (16) | Top Critics (11)

Balasco has created a fully realized world of believable characters that like to express themselves with their fists. The resulting drama makes for compelling viewing... when you don't have to duck your eyes for cover.

We have solid setups here for tales of love, redemption, friendship and the same championship dreams that made Rocky an American icon.

Like Friday Night Lights before it -- which, I should mention, none of the Kingdom writers worked on -- Kingdom puts its stories on an equal playing field, rolling all of its plots together in a concentrated effort to keep episodes humming along.

Oct 8, 2014 | Rating: A- | Full Review…

This is an incredibly violent and an incredibly powerful show about men who find it difficult to talk to one another but have no problem raising their voices - and their fists.

Oct 7, 2014 | Full Review…

Kingdom isn't the next great television show about sports. It's just a really great television show.

Featuring a strong cast, a unique setting, and an alternately energetic and reflective tone, the series has a lot going for it and could easily grow into a surprise hit for DirecTV, if viewers can find it.

Oct 8, 2014 | Rating: B+ | Full Review…

[It] quickly establishes itself as a solid drama. There are plenty of boxing-movie-type cliches in creator Byron Balasco's series, but DirecTV's latest original still delivers a surprisingly potent punch.

Welcome to "The Sopranos" that takes place in a gym...look, I championed this series as much as any living soul in America.

Nov 10, 2020 | Full Review…

Creator Byron Balasco's sense of pacing seems off, as if he's trying to figure out the direction as he goes along.

Oct 8, 2014 | Rating: C | Full Review…

The gritty, dire, drug-addicting side stories mute and dull the intended impact. Makes Ray Donovan seem like Shakespeare.

Oct 8, 2014 | Full Review…

Using its Venice, California, locations to terrifically seedy effect, with gamy and graphic content on par with premium cable, this multigenerational story impresses with its blunt-force depiction of an urban warrior culture.

Oct 8, 2014 | Full Review…

Kingdom... is sexier and grittier than past [DirecTV] programs and marks an effort to reach out to the elusive young male audience that would rather watch MMA fights than a scripted drama series.

Audience Reviews for Kingdom: Season 1

Awesome season. Very believable. Good drama without getting weepy. A great take on the MMA world and the toll it takes on fighter's lives.

It was mesmerizing in every way. The acting, the content, the Jonathon Tucker role was so well played. What an actor. I was surprised at Nick Jonas as well. At first I thought ''Don't quit your day job'' but he played a difficult role quite well. I hated to see it end and was so sad with the loss of the Jonas role.

I was sucked into this show right from the start. Jay Kulina is everything. Jonathon gives amazing life to this character. The writing is supreme. Nothing is done just because, it all has a reason. Frank and Nick are amazing.
