The genius of Thorne's writing is that he plays to his viewers' assumptions and then pulls the rug out from underneath them, exposing their own biases in the process.

It takes a special kind of talent to get an audience to root for a character who drink-drives their way around town, leaves their beloved dog to potentially asphyxiate himself in the car and then vomits all over their friend's rug.

It feels appropriate that the beautifully observed and not-as-grim-as-expected Kiri (Channel 4) opens with a small dark laugh. The kind that tugs at the corners of the mouth where sadness also resides.

Fortunately, the programme itself is much more nuanced than that, with the 'issues' side of things never overshadowing the human story, and the main characters permitted to be a complicated lot.

    Started out strong but then started dragging on in episode #3 out of 4. It could have been wrapped up in three episodes.
